Dine or Ditch: Islands of Adventure's Mythos

Long awarded "World's Best Theme Park Restaurant" by Theme Park Insider, Mythos certainly wins the Universal Islands of Adventure award for most iconic exterior. It's a breathtaking piece of work! Placed in the ever shrinking Lost Continent section of the park (will The Legend of Zelda replace it?), the magnificent building houses a popular eatery. But is Mythos a good one or merely resting on its laurels? That's the focus of this latest Dine or Ditch installment.
Banner proudly proclaiming its award status.

Unlike those most sought after restaurants at competitor Walt Disney World, obtaining dining reservations for similar type fare at Universal Orlando Resort is easy, fast, and with seating generally available for exactly when you want it. How nice a change that is!

We saved Mythos for last. The night before, we dined at City Walk's Toothsome Chocolate Emporium with the same goal in mind: an enjoyable meal to weed through all the hype.

From checking in at the front kiosk, seating was quick, bringing us a nice respite from the heat outside. The room seemed much warmer and louder than I expected, but the large viewing windows held quite a spectacular sight: The trains of The Hulk coaster zipped by across the lagoon. Made for a rather fun topic of discussion as we bantered about the merits of Universal Orlando vs. Walt Disney World. Seating here is in stadium type layers with each row slightly above the previous ones so most everyone in the place has a good view of all the action.

Our server arrived quickly with menus, followed by cold water. Our drink order came quickly: A Cucumber Martini for me, a glass of white wine for my wife, and a local beer for our son, name forgotten. Each was a generous pour at a typical higher than normal but normal for a theme park price. Tasty, refreshing, and just the thing to end a long day at Islands of Adventure and the one of a kind thrills of Velocicoaster and Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure.

The starters on the menu were varied and appealing, making a good beginning. We opted for the Lamb Meatballs. I found them rather tasty, very moist, and with a slight tang. Unfortunately, I was the only fan among our table. My wife was not impressed and neither was our son.

My eye was instantly drawn to the Pad Thai noodles- one of my favorite dishes in Asian cuisine, something we had not eaten much of on this trip. We'd planned a meal at Morimoto Asia at Disney Springs, but we ran out of time. It was a quick decision.

The entrees. A decent selection to be sure.

But what would everyone else choose?

My son, on the other hand, only tolerates Asian cuisine and went directly for the big, beefy burger. Brick Oven Roasted Chicken tempted my wife and completed our order.

The burger was exactly what you'd expect at a higher end restaurant. I thought it'd be very, very difficult to beat the one at The Edison, but he pronounced it as just what the doctor ordered. Flavorful, fresh, and with a great bun.

My wife is not a fussy eater, and she truly enjoyed the chicken and the fingerling potatoes side dish. The chicken held just enough of the Mediterranean spice and not too much. Exactly to her liking.

Pad Thai noodles. Photographer unknown.

That was the problem with my Pad Thai. The noodles were great, the crushed nuts and fresh vegetables perfect, but it was a total let down in the spice department. The peanut sauce had no bite. In this dish, the sauce makes or breaks the dish.

All three of our dishes, much like our drinks, had more than adequate portions. We were left without room or desire for dessert. That said, there were quite a few options that caught my eye. But the sun was still beating down outside, and I didn't feel like walking away that full when the temporary sugar rush was soon crash.

Nice but not compelling at least for this dinner.

Is Mythos really the "World's Best Theme Park Restaurant"? No, not at all. That award truly belongs elsewhere. But is it a Dine or Ditch?

It's a "Dine here" if you're looking for something slightly out of the ordinary with a great park lagoon view. It would be stunning in the evening. There's certainly something for multiple tastes and budgets at a fairly reasonable price. Mythos is kid friendly without catering to them. As it is a bit more expensive than the park's other restaurants, I'd think twice bringing the kiddos if they're used to being loud and having the run of the place.

It's a definite "Ditch this place" if you believe the hype and fully expect it to meet that measurement. There are much better choices at Universal's City Walk and even at their on site hotels.  Especially at the price point. To be fair, we did eat here almost two years ago when the menu was smaller, staff was harder to come by, and things in general seemed less festive. That said, I still would not return. Mythos is just not special enough to warrant a return visit.

And Many More

For my records, a follow up to an earlier photo. Today is my father's birthday. He's quite the character to say the least! (Unexpectedly, his watch face is Mickey Mouse!) Happy Birthday, Dad- and many more I hope.

Walt Disney on the It's A Small World Construction Site

Walt Disney was certainly a visionary, but he was also very hands-on! When it came to building the Disneyland version of It's a Small World,  he relied on two of his most distinctive Imagineers to bring it all together: Mary Blair and Rolly Crump. Mary was chiefly responsible for the style and color palette of the interior, while Rolly contributed to the attractions iconic exterior.

Walt directed the ship- and the park was better for it- but he also knew what it took to "sell" his projects. Not only did he get Pepsi to invest in the attractions creation when it came to the New York World's Fair, he got the rights to bring it home to Anaheim's Fantasyland, and his team brought in yet another sponsor there. Smart guy! In the photo above, he's shown with sponsor Bank of America's head honcho as the attraction's exterior was being completed.

Walt was savvy! He wanted to best for his guests, and he creatively found ways to enhance the park. The focus on excellence resulted in happy investors in the company. It's certainly a strategy that paid off. Something that future CEO's did at times understand and sometimes not at all. Where would you rank the three most recent: Michael Eisner, Robert Iger, and Bob Chapek? I'd say it was most definitely a mixed bag. Truth is, there is still no one like Walt!

Olivia Newton-John Shines Again

Olivia Newton-John's Greatest Hits Deluxe Edition, a 2 LP special set sounds absolutely terrific on vinyl! Covering her earlier pre-Grease hits, there's more than a country tinge to the numbers, but Olivia soars above it all with lighter than air lead vocals and plenty of layering of that unique voice. I Honestly Love You, Please Mr. Please, and If Not For You shine! Not to be outdone, Something Better to Do and Have You Never Been Mellow sound even better if that's possible. Olivia's version of Don't Cry for Me Argentina is here as well. It was released in 1977 around the time of Carpenters' album Passage which also included the song. In one more connection with Karen Carpenter, the cover photo of this Olivia package but shot by French photographer Claude Mougin who also took the photos for Karen's one and only solo album.

What a wonderful listen this collection is! A very worthy addition to your audio library.

Frightfully Funny Haunted Mansion Movie Promotion

Would you like to purchase Disney's Haunted Mansion? Of course, like any home buyer, you'd want to take a tour of the place before making the decision. What if you were relocating (as we all will be one day)? Then perhaps a Zillow on line tour is right for you.

The 13,000 square foot home is far from a starter, but it is a Fixer Upper! Just take a look at the listing right here. In the soon to be released movie, Rosario Dawson purchases the New Orleans home with an electrifying and terrifying past, but soon enough, it's LaKeith Stanfield, Owen Wilson, and Danny Devito to the rescue.

Sure, the exterior is decrepit- fully at home in New Orleans Square and even in the Big Easy's Garden District. But it is equally fit in Liberty Square in Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom

One thing is for sure. After watching the Zillow listing, I'd say it is time to call in Chip and Joanna Gaines.

Karen and Richard Carpenter Celebrate Mouseketeer and Drummer Cubby O'Brien

July 14, 1977. A rather special day for a variety of reasons. Here's Richard and Karen Carpenter in Las Vegas celebrating the birthday of drummer Cubby O'Brien. A rare group photo taken a few months before the debut of their 1977 release Passage

It's a special photo for me as well! I saw them play Vegas during this series, and in a funny coincidence, I share a birthday- today- with the beloved Mouseketeer.

I was blessed to see the Carpenters several times during their all too short career. Their music had an enormous impact on my life! If you're curious to read an in depth look at each of their recordings, including rare photos, and get a look at life during the time of Karen and Richard's massive impact on radio, look no further. Below is a list of each album review as well as ones written a decade earlier. In addition, there are many, many articles and rare photos as stand alone posts on the blog. Enjoy!

Disney's International Village of Friendship

Here's a rarely seen piece of Disney concept art! Imagineering has always tended to put its best foot forward when it comes to giving the money men renderings that get those important projects approved. From brand new theme parks to groundbreaking attractions, the business side of the Walt Disney Company must look at hard facts and financial projections before approving a project. They're not hired to be artistic or visionary!

When it came to just about everything surrounding EPCOT Center, the second theme park at Walt Disney World, the business side quickly realized the impact of developing more of those 40 plus thousand acres. A new theme park would drive the need for more places to stay for all those tourists- and room rentals are BIG money makers. (It's one reason that Luau Cove at the Polynesian Village Resort is giving way to yet another Disney Vacation Club location.)

In the case of cast members having to be international students to create the realistic culture for World Showcase, Disney also had to provide appealing lodging to create a sense of community. Enter International Village, an ambitious, first of its kind campus and living center. Cast members recruited from all over the world would live together in peace and harmony in a welcoming and attractive complex.  New friendships would foster greater understanding about the world around us. What a loft goal! But that's what EPCOT Center was all about- making our world a better place. Does the Company care anymore about that? I guess a case could be made both prop and con. But that is a discussion for another day.

Imagineering Theme Park Wars: Michael Eisner vs. Robert Iger vs. Bob Chapek

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny may not be the biggest smash Disney and Lucas hoped for, but the company that Walt Disney loved just released a great looking new video of the classic Indiana Jones Adventure. If you're an Imagineering fan or a fan of Tony Baxter specifically, you know that this single attraction is one of the finest created under the incredible first-half leadership of Michael Eisner

When it comes to Imagineering success and the U.S. parks, Eisner was king for his first season. Robert Iger left them mostly to rot as he was busy buying up other intellectual properties like Pixar and Marvel. Chapek barely made a dent- thankfully.

The real Imagineering wars are taking place right now between Universal Creative and the Walt Disney Company. The upcoming Epic Universe will has the potential to take one more day from tourists visiting Disney with its stellar lineup of Super Mario Brothers land, How to Train Your Dragon, Classic Monsters, and of course, the next installment of the king of them all- Harry Potter and his incredible adventures.

Back to the last three Disney leaders-Aside from the groundbreaking Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, I'd put up any E Ticket attraction built under Michael Eisner's first half next to anything for the U.S. parks created under the Robert Iger or Bob Chapek regimes. Splash Mountain alone beats out much of the newer rides. So does Expedition: Everest or Twilight Zone Tower of Terror

What would you say?

I have SO many posts on this blog regarding the excellent Indiana Jones Adventure- and I was there at Disneyland on opening weekend! You can find rare concept art and more. Happy exploring!

Disneyland Honors America's Bicentennial

In honor of America today, here is the 1976 Bicentennial Railroad poster for Disneyland's beloved trains. This attraction poster has all the charm of the earlier ones in a brilliant red, white, and blue color scheme.

Just like Walt Disney, our is a Land of Liberty that I love! Yes, I'm a citizen of the United States of America, and although I am not always happy with the decisions of our governing body, I still maintain that we are the most free country on earth. We can worship freely, speak freely, and lives our lives according to our own values. You can't do this everywhere. Travel the world and you'll see this to be a fact.

This blog has one of the largest collections of attraction posters on the net. Why? I love the attraction posters, especially the original Disneyland ones, so I started collecting them years ago. You'll find them here for Disneyland, Walt Disney World, Disneyland Paris, Tokyo Disneyland and more. Enjoy the search!

Notable and Quotable: Larry Osborne

"If we claim to be followers of Jesus, there's never a good reason for panic. God loves a mess. After all, it takes a mess to have a miracle."

Larry Osborne, Author of Thriving in Babylon

I love this quote! How many times do I have to learn this lesson- that if I wait instead of panic, God comes through and I learn a lesson, see Him in a deeper more mature way, and watch God at work...even if the end result is not something I initially want. Even though I know better, I can fall into the trap of thinking being a follower of Jesus means I deserve and can get an easy life. (How'd that work out for His disciples?) Then I remember, it's truly about dying to self and living for God's purposes, relying on God's grace and not my own works to gain me favor and forgiveness from God. Major lessons taught over and over again...
