Beware Netflix Users

Take a word of hard earned advice from someone who didn't know better: Netflix mixes porn of all sorts in with their "Romantic Comedy" offerings. My wife and I had viewed a fluff-filled and harmless Hallmark romantic comedy. Looking for another one, we found one that looked interesting and pressed play.

What immediately came on our screen was hardcore gay porn. I was not amused. Off it went immediately. I don't do porn. If you do or not, it's your choice, but I will tell you it has ruined many lives- and I know that from first hand tales told to me by broken husbands and distraught wives.

But that's not the point. Just be aware of how Netflix sorts their films.

For the Love of Money and Kim Kardashian

Look at this woman. She's quite attractive, right? Well, right now, just about everyone all over the world is looking at her, showing off her backside totally exposed.

May I ask, "What is wrong with Kim Kardashian?" Ultimately, she is just another person engulfed by the need for celebrity and money. She's a reflection of a world gone crazy, a world so impacted by sin, both individual and corporate, that she has forgotten she must answer to God for the way she has handled her life and her resources.

Let's face it, in some ways, she's trading off her body for fame and fortune- just like so many others. No different than what is done behind closed doors. Kim's choices are leading men down the dangerous path of pornography and sex addiction- and her choices are influencing other young women to compromise themselves for a buck.

"All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God."

Kim's no different, just more, um, visible. Thankfully, Jesus has paid the price for her sins, your sins, and mine. May she come to know him, turn from her ways, and live free for God. The only way to eternal life with God is through His Only Son, the payment for our penalty of death: Jesus Christ.

Must See This Lingerie Ad!

This has to be one of the most impactful videos I have seen in quite awhile. It's in Thai but has English subtitles. It's worth every minute spent watching.

Discovering an X-Rated Disney World

Yesterday, much to my dismay, I discovered one of my favorite Disney sites had been hacked. In the place of the family friendly welcome page was a very large piece of not-your-garden-variety Playboy centerfold porn. Very, very sad. What kind of sick person would do this, exposing others- including children- to these kinds of images? In my opinion, it is the parent's responsibility to teach their children about sexuality, and no one else's. Be that letting their kids learn about sexuality from proper authorities at school, at their place of worship, or at home. But on the web? Really? Pure evil.

Further, it is not the job of television or films, Disney or otherwise, to do it either. Yet, again, the news broadcasts have generally become places where news is interpreted as its being reported- another sign of responsibility being bent.

Destroying Addictions

Why are we drawn to what destroys us? It seems like friends are going backwards into the very things, the very habits, that Jesus freed them from. It hurts me to watch- and I can fall into it myself too if I'm not careful. "We are as free as we want to be!" I tell myself and others. Cutting, porn, you name it- our addictions can destroy us every time we say yes instead of no. If you need help, find it- please. "It is for freedom that Christ has set us free." Galatians 5:1.

Male Ambiguity 3

Continuing on with our discussion of Male Ambiguity...

There is an incredible plan for each of us. Our unique personality, likes and dislikes, strengths, weaknesses and skills and talents are not happenstance. We are all different for a reason! That's a great thing- what a boring world it would be should we all be the same!

That said, we cannot be all that our Creator has designed us for if we fight Him and remain in unhealthy places in our lives. Have we created a hole so deep by "just surviving" that we are afraid to take steps to health?

"For as he thinketh within himself, so is he" (Proverbs 23: 7, American Standard Version)

Where can we get stuck? Author Leeann Payne writes, “In secure possession of their gender identity, the great majority of men moved from the chest, as it were, out of hearts freed from the Legalisms of Childhood, the Narcissisms of Adolescence, or the Perfectionisms of an Adulthood spent futilely seeking self acceptance (or even the affirmation of parents).”
Crisis in Masculinity; page 13

Question: Let’s look at these and see if we find ourselves here in one spot or in many…

“Legalisms of Childhood”

This may be best represented by folks who tell others what to do and how to do it- but don't follow their own advice, setting themselves up as an example. They live unrestrained lives, taking actions which immediately or eventually inflict pain on others or use them for their own pleasure or purposes. Everything is about them and what they want. As adults, we know real community and true love requires sacrifice and looking out for the needs of others first.

For those stuck in this childish mode, there can be an unspoken list of Do’s and Don’ts, Shoulds and Shouldn’ts. Maybe its is being Performance Driven and Oriented; the ends justifies the means. Success at all costs. “Fair” is a big deal, “The Way Things Should Be”. These folks stuck here can live their lives under expectations, judgments, and curses- and they tend to do the same to others, especially when they do not get what they want. Roles are important, so relationships may be difficult, and status means quite a bit to them. You might see them tend toward a joyless life.

“Narcissisms of Adolescence ”

May be best represented by those folks who are a slave to their passions. Characterized by a lack of self-control and a huge ego or a deeply wounded one. These kind of guys cannot control the carnal nature but instead indulge it with abandon, to the detriment of the truly important relationships they do have, risking health, career, and maturity. Very vulnerable to addictions- overeater, being a workaholic, alcoholic, sex addict. My needs and wants, my time, my interests, my hobbies- “It’s All About Me”, “What’s in it for me?” The common good is unimportant, so commitment may be a one way street. Relationships are probably many but may be shallow. I can fall into this one: he fears growing up and taking responsibility. If he is a parent, he could be living life through his children.

God wants to bless the people He loves with freedom and joy- and his patterns for life are guidelines which bring safety and blessing and personal fulfillment that is deep and lasting. Then, and only then, do our lives bring Him honor- and our soul is at rest. The great Apostle Paul writes, "You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness." Ephesians 4:22-24

“Perfectionisms of Adulthood ”

For guys stuck here, there is a high need to prove authority and position. Image and control are very important. He'll use words and actions to manipulate. Having to look and be perfect, he is an easy target for a “secret life” where his addictions and actions that would disqualify him and ruin his image can take root and grow. Without friends for real support and honesty, he is lost in patterns which will destroy his life.

It's not just the "big" areas that can create problems here. I know men who couldn't tell the truth, men with uncontrollable tempers, men who stole small items at work, or others who couldn't control their need to look like the nice guy to everyone. Each experienced devastating consequences as something that didn't seem so significant finally became more important to them than what they really wanted in life. Most importantly, thet lost self-respect as well as losing sight of who they were. Patterns were set in place that couldn't be easily removed and without help.

What are some common characteristics in all these three stages and descriptions?

• Fear Based Decisions and Actions (or lack of action)
• Self-focused- difficult to think of or support others
• Can be emotionally inattentive to primary relationships
• Has difficulty focusing on God’s hand of blessing in their lives
• Compensates for something lost or something never gained
• For those of us married, we can turn responsibility over to our wives, leaving them burdened, confused and hurting
• Those of us with children can leave them confused, too.

Ultimately, we can be confused about who we really are as men, and instead, live a life full of good intentions without ever doing anything with them! Very disappointing and unfulfilling.

In an age where the world needs heroes, and we as men are looking at others by which we can model our lives, let's take a look at Jesus Christ as our model of manhood. Even if you are not a Christian, there are many things you can learn by examining the life of this extraordinary person.

The Bible says He dealt with the same temptations as us (Hebrews 4:15), so in this regard, his life on earth was no different than ours. This means ALL temptations- insert your own favorite struggle here. Jesus chose to be baptized by John, who was confused why the Son of God would want a baptism of repentance.

"Jesus replied, "Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness." Then John consented. He took ownership of what was right, and He chose to live his life in a way that would be a blessing to others.

He was tempted with all things. Look at this passage in the Book of Matthew, Chapter 4:
1 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. 2 After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. 3 The tempter came to him and said, "If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread."

4 Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'"

5 Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. 6 "If you are the Son of God," he said, "throw yourself down. For it is written:

"'He will command his angels concerning you,
and they will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.'"

7 Jesus answered him, "It is also written: 'Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'"

8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. 9 "All this I will give you," he said, "if you will bow down and worship me."

10 Jesus said to him, "Away from me, Satan! For it is written: 'Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.'"

11 Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.

Notice that twice Satan says “If you are the Son of God…” questioning his identity in the Father. When Jesus doesn’t cave in, Satan offers him all the world has in exchange for His true identity. There is nothing that evil men like more than when we lose sight of who we really are and trade it in for short term pleasures and pursuits. We are designed to make a positive difference in our world, but we can throw it all away so easily.

Jesus could have tossed it all away, but instead chose to make the ultimate sacrifice, choosing to die on the cross for the sins of all men for all time. Was there ever a bigger or more difficult mission than that? He is the Hero of all time, a worthy role model for those of us who want to be more than we are and to make our world a better place.

Now, for those of us who are trying to follow Jesus, Paul again has encouraging words regarding Our Sonship, Our Manhood, Our Identity. In Galatians 3:26-28, he writes, "You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus."

Be warned: When we choose to live differently, we will be challenged, even attacked for the choice. The Same Experience as with Jesus will happen to us: We will be questioned by others our identity (And we will sometimes question ourselves about our identity in Christ). Through the ways of the world, we will be offered whatever appeals to us in exchange for our Manhood, our True Identity! These offers will become available to us as we make choices along the way toward whatever we place before God, thereby setting our hearts up for deceit.

Let me ask you a question, "What have we exchanged for our True Manhood, Our Godly Identity in Jesus?” or even "What compromises have I made in my life in order to not 'rock the boat'?" If you do not know the answers, ask those you trust- and listen well.

The answers will reveal the very areas that hold us captive to a life that is far less satisfying than the one we want. Then ask God for the strength to do what is right and honorable. There will be blessing as freedom as you forge ahead in his strength.

Jesus and Oral Sex

How is that for a catchy title? Have your attention?

Unfortunately, there is some artwork in a Loveland, Colorado museum seemingly depicting The Creator of the Universe receiving oral sex by a man. (Sorry, no photo for this post!)

I'm all for freedom of expression, but this crosses the line. What about kindness and sensitivity to others and true diversity? If nothing else, if this is in fact true, it is a hateful thing to do, intending to offend even if providing social commentary. Same holds true for those idiots who broadcast that poor young man in sexual acts, causing him to commit suicide. There are no boundaries anymore, I guess.

May God forgive the artist for this lack of good judgment and the city of Loveland for even allowing this to be shown. I forgot, He already did by dying for their sins regardless of what they are- these folks just have to ask for it.

Risky Love

In our day, Marriage is a risky choice- a courageously brave and difficult choice!

We live in a culture of short term commitments:
• Throwaway relationships and Disposable Marriages
• Employment that ends with the benefits don’t suit someone
• Facebook Friends we never see Face to Face

We can live our lives with the attitude of “What’s in it for me?”
We desire to live our lives without making promises.
The problem is- then no one makes promises to us!
All of which makes marriage the biggest gamble we take!

In the book of Ephesians, the Apostle Paul tells us husbands should love their wives as Jesus loved the church. But what exactly does that mean?

It means marriage is a choice of dying to our own preferences for the sake of our mate- doing this on a daily basis and holding to the promises we make on our wedding day.

When Jesus, by choice, chose to die on the cross to pay for the sins of Man, he was taking a huge risk. He knew some would not accept His Love and His Sacrifice. And the Enemy was against Him. But the pending reward of eternity with those who believed outweighed the risk. So, Jesus gave up his life because He loved His Father and he loved the people He created.

There will be times when keeping the promises will be impossible. The pain will be so deep, when the anger and fear seems impossible to bridge, when you totally forget why you even chose to marry and may regret your choice. Your friends and family may even encourage you to opt out of your promises, but this is when Love can win.

As you persevere in marriage and do so with a heart to sacrifice, your rewards will be great. God will use you to heal and bless each other- and to be a witness of His Love to a world that is dying. As you persevere, you will be transformed into the image of Christ- and you will bless your Heavenly Father by choosing obedience and sacrifice versus self indulgence!

Insights and Sounds 2nd Anniversary!

Today marks the Two Year anniversary of the Insights and Sounds blog. Thank you for reading!

Just as I did one year ago, I thought it would be good to recap my first post for a bit of fun. Now, with over 700 posts behind me, here it is:
"The biggest question on my mind today is "What am I doing here?" Or if I was in a fairly obnoxious mood, it might be "What are YOU doing here?"Random thoughts is a good name for this first post because I really don't know what I'll be sharing every time I add something. My hunch is this is where you'll hear about what interests me, what I think about what's going on in this world, what I'm trying to figure out, or how we can really make a difference. Maybe I'm really just looking for a place to journal...

Why "Insights and Sounds"? A play on words. Kinda thought it would be fun sharing reflections and revelations, music and movie perspectives, travel experiences and photos, and thoughts on faith. Regarding that last piece, a verse out of a letter called First Corinthians happens to be my favorite : "No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him."

If you check in here often, you'll discover that I'm really a geek at heart, pretty sentimental, not sophisticated, and for the most part, that I really like people. Hope that works for you!"

In two years worth of time, this blog has become something very personal for me. I loved it, and I've hated it. It's become part family album, part music and movie review site, sometimes inspirational reading/writing blog, travelogue, and foremost an absolutely clear expression of my appreciation for the Imagineers and the Disney theme parks- especially the original: Disneyland.
Interestingly, many of my posts on sex and relationships are among the highest searched and read! (Guess my blog does reflect the Internet in general!)I'll be adding more of these as I feel the need or have some new and interesting insights to share. But feel free to search- and all of them are written in a "family friendly" way.

If this is your first visit, welcome! I'm glad you're here. You might like to see some examples of some of my favorite posts. They cover a wide range of topics just to keep things interesting. Here's 15 of the more than 700, with an emphasis on what was posted during Year Two:

My popular posts on Walt Disney World circa 1989 (The World's largest expansion to date- a photo heavy trip report on the Studios and Pleasure Island and the Resorts)is still up. Also my reports on the Disneyland Resort, other Florida trips, and Disneyland Paris can be found too. No Asian Disney resorts- yet! ;)

I'll sneak in a few family photos old and new from time to time- thanks for letting me indulge. If you want a more personal look at who I am, here's my acceptance speech.

Thank you again for joining me for so long now. I appreciate your feedback even if I do not always agree with you! You've been good friends, making me think hard about my life, my faith, and the company I love to follow. Really, I am so blessed to have you with me!Let's begin Year Three, shall we?

Ringing Loud and Clear

A few years back, my wife and I traveled to Alaska for a wedding, and to this day, I am still perplexed by what happened that day. It continues to amaze me. The ceremony itself caused me to be challenged. Let me explain.

As it is with many weddings these days, this was a very non-traditional one. The bride and groom wrote their own vows. They were sweet and tender, and even a little humorous if you knew them. But in what was a new experience for me, the Maid of Honor spoke up and said something prior to the rings being shared.

In what may be seen as very indicative of the spiritual climate of the day, she began her comments with something about “the god above and the goddess below", then she wished them (and I cannot give you an exact quote here)- the peace of Buddha, the _?_ of Krishna, the passion of Pele (Hawaiian goddess of fire) in their love life, and the _?_ of Thor (Norwegian god of thunder and war). Everybody but Jesus and the Cat in the Hat seemed to be included. Now, that is not to be disrespectful with my words. I choose them just to give you a full picture of her words and their shock value to my ears.

Again, that was the maid of honor speaking. I know a little something about the bride and groom, and I have no idea what they thought about this "prayer of blessing" or anyone else’s thoughts at the wedding, for that matter.

This entire experience challenges me in my prayer life. How can I reconcile her words with those of Jesus? "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." (John 14:6)

Yet, here is a very nice, well-meaning woman truly believing in any and all gods of the earth- aside from the One True God who created it all. I thought who else at this ceremony is fully embracing this concept of many gods and goddesses? Or even just the idea of “earth and nature worship”- which is so common these days among people who are really just looking for God?

All people are searching for meaning and order to their world. And Jesus loves all of them and died for all of them. But let’s be clear- no one will enter into heaven at their death by believing in and worshiping everyone and anyone but Him. Jesus said it himself. Either He is telling the truth about who He is and why he came to earth in human form or He isn’t. Pretty simple. And pretty unpopular and very politically incorrect in his day and in ours. But they are His words, not mine.

The Bible is pretty clear on these matters of multiple gods and earth worship. The apostle Paul writes:

“They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.” (II Timothy 4:4) and this one:

"We know that an idol is nothing at all in the world and that there is no God but one. For even if there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth (as indeed there are many "gods" and many "lords"), yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we live; and there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we live." (I Corinthians 8:4-6)

And these verses from the book of Romans talk about the worship of the creation and of animals, certainly not a new thing:

"For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles. " (Romans 1:21-23)

The "No one"s ring really loud and clear.

So what are we to do? Love well, live kindly and respectfully, and speak wisely.

Most people know of Jesus- head knowledge, school book, even church trained stuff. But how many really know and are intimate with Him in the way the Bible speaks of having a life-giving relationship with him? Heart knowledge? Knowledge of their sinfulness and of their need for Him? Many of us have family members and dear friends who do not know Jesus at the level He challenges us to. At the very depth of relationship that will one day lead us to eternal life with Him with or without Him.

We can all do our part, however, by loving well, living kindly, and speaking well. This is the best way to share the heart, the love, and the message of Jesus.

Sex Talk

I listen for a living.

It can be exhausting; it can be enlightening; it can be encouraging. Sometimes it is just frustrating.

The last few months, having spoken with men of many ages in various stages of life, there has been a common annoying thread: sex talk. Bad sex talk at that. What do I mean?

To quote the Twilight Zone's Rod Serling, "Imagine if you will..." a man talking about his dating relationship or his marriage. He wants to see things get better, and he wants something rich and meaningful in his partnership. When the subject comes to sex, I'm no prude- yet when this same man starts using vulgar slang for sexual activities or body parts, I've got to wonder what he is thinking. From those in their 20s to those in their 60s, men of various ages, professions, and status, seem to go from gentlemen to voracious readers of porn based on the way they talk.

Particularly, if he is not getting the kind of action he wants in bed. I've got to wonder if he talks to his woman in the same manner. No self-respecting woman I know would put up with it- or perform it- when sex is presented like that. For that matter, why degrade the very beautiful thing designed by God for our pleasure?

Time for us men to grow up. It's time to use our words to build each other up, to encourage each other, and to put our spouses preference before our own. That is what love is. I bet if we would really love each other, love each other sacrificially, there would be more than enough of all the sex we want.

The Garden of Hope

Human trafficking. A disgusting, heartbreaking problem all over Southeast Asia- and one that, I'm ashamed to say, folks of my gender contribute to. The "freedom" of pornography only fuels the fire for the real thing. Nor is it just in Asia, as the U.S. State Department estimates 14 to 17 thousand victims are brought to the United States each year.

Take a look at this group. The Garden of Hope folks are making a tangible difference in the lives of abused women. Its a very worthy cause in which YOU can make a difference.

Jesus and the Midnight Cowboy

Funny but true- check it out here. I've always loved how Jesus wasn't afraid of people who were outcasts in his world. From the prostitute to the tax collector to the religious leaders to the common people, Jesus mixed it up and told the truth. And isn't truth what the world needs right about now?

Grey's Final Low Moment

Anyone looking for more evidence that Grey's Anatomy has lost its way? Just watch Thursday night's show. Creator Shonda Rhimes has let this once excellent drama fall apart, devolving into prime time soft porn.

Through poor choices of his own doing, Grey's strongest actor, Isaiah Washington left the show- and the downward spiral began. Story lines took a dip, characters became caricatures, and strong writing all but disappeared. We wondered if greatness would ever return. It wasn't to be.

For this writer, the final blow took place last night. Count one viewer lost.

Little (Porn) Shop of Horrors

Ran into a pleasant surprise this last week: the local porn shop in our neighborhood went out of business. Have to say I am glad! But then, I get to hear the horror stories of guys who get addicted to this stuff. They never expect to, yet eventually they get drawn in farther than they ever intended. Thinking it brings or expresses freedom, instead it creates bondage, ruins lives, marriages, and rips families apart. Porn degrades humans and reduces men to animals, leaving us unable to have healthy sexual relationships with our partners. An ugly story all around. If you find that you need help, go here before you get in way over your head. It is never too late to choose real health and true freedom!
