Making The Perfect Thanksgiving Even Better

Sometimes, not often enough, we reflect upon the good things. And those thoughts always center around those we love, and I think about those people who mean so much to me. And for so many years have made me so very happy. And I count the times I have forgotten to say "Thank you", and just how much I love them.

Those lyrics above as recorded by Richard and Karen Carpenter on their "Tan" album sadly but accurately reflect so much of the world around us today.  Want a Thanksgiving that is truly different? Try reflecting on these lyrics from a different songwriter: "I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart; I will recount all of your wonderful deeds." The Psalmist writes this as a prayer, recalling all the great things God has done in his life. Oh, how much better my life would be if I'd stop and recount my blessings! How about you?

It's a Wonderful Thanksgiving!

It's Thanksgiving Day 2024. We may not be a perfect country- far from it actually- but there is much to give thanks for: family, friends, home, provision, and a country that is free under the Almighty God.

Imagineer Herb Ryman created this piece of beautiful concept art in 1979 for the American Adventure. Another breathtaking work of art!  EPCOT Center celebrates many cultures, and this pavilion acts as the park's host. This rendering is certainly beautiful. It's among Herb's best pieces.

Let me encourage you and your family and friends to take a moment to give God thanks for all He has given you. It's one of the strongest exhortations in the Bible repeated so many times: "Give Thanks to the Lord for He is Good; His Love Endures Forever!"

A Thanksgiving Song by Richard and Karen Carpenter

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving, and this beautiful song by the Carpenters is the closest thing we have to the magnificent Karen Carpenter singing a song specifically for this important day. "Sometimes" was written by Felice Mancini, the daughter of celebrated composer Henry Mancini. The simple piano accompaniment by brother Richard is just perfect. There's no strings, no drums, no guitars or woodwinds. Just Kaen and Richard doing what they do best. Clean, simple, pure.

Live version. Just beautiful!

Karen and Richard Carpenter recorded it for the beautiful, Grammy award winning Tan Album, (officially known as "Carpenters"), and the song became an instant classic. Proving once again that the man had very good taste in choosing material for his sister to sing.

The Tan album with its premier
of the memorable Carpenters logo and silhouette image.

I'm constantly reminded to also give thanks to God above for His gift of Eternal Life offered through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. In fact, the Bible says many times, "Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good. His love endures forever." And it does!

Today, as I thank God for my blessings, I dedicate this song to my wife, my children, and grandchildren for making my life so rich.

Sometimes not often enough
We reflect upon the good things
And those thoughts always center
around those we love
And I think about those people
who mean so much to me
And for so many years have made me so very happy
And I count the times I have forgotten
 to say "thank you"
And just how much I love them

Friday is the day to jump into Christmas and put the classic Christmas Portrait on the turntable. But for now, take time to reflect on what you have to be thankful for. It does a heart good!

Sometimes Not Often Enough

Today is Thanksgiving. Sometimes- wow, what a record! This simple and very beautiful song by the Carpenters is the nearest thing we have to them singing a song befitting this holiday. Of course, their Christmas Portrait is filled with songs that include sacred ones. Karen's rendition of Silent Night being one of the most striking ones giving honor to the One who makes Christmas what it is truly about.

Karen and Richard Carpenter recorded song by Felicia Mancini, daughter of famous songwriter Henry, for the Grammy award winning album Carpenters, known to fans as the Tan Album.

Sometimes not often enough
We reflect upon the good things
And those thoughts always center
around those we love
And I think about those people
who mean so much to me
And for so many years have made me so very happy
And I count the times I have forgotten
 to say "thank you"
And just how much I love them

The live version at the top is Karen and Richard at their best. Herb Alpert knew what he was doing by signing them to A&M Records!

Disciplinary Action

This takes an act of self-discipline to do this, especially when things don't seem to be going the way we'd like. But I guess that makes it even more important, doesn't it? Will you challenge yourself? Will I?

Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.

Time for Christmas!

The day after Thanksgiving traditionally begins the Christmas season in our home. The outside lights and indoor decorations go up, and the tree is embellished with ornaments that are reminders of our travels, our family, and our faith. It's all set while listening to the classic Christmas Portrait album by Richard and Karen Carpenter. In many ways, it doesn't feel like the holiday season to me until the Carpenters version of Christmas Waltz begins, "Frosted windowpanes..." Karen's magnificent voice fills the room and floods my heart with warmth. Yet, nothing touches me as deeply as the love Jesus Christ has more me. When I stop and think of how my life would be without him- both on this earth and eternally- gratefulness fills my heart. What freedom, what hope, what peace we who believe have in Jesus Christ! A real reason to celebrate all year long.

Notable and Quotable: Henri Nouwen

"As our prayer deepens into a constant awareness of God's goodness, the spirit of gratitude grows within us. Gratitude flows from the recognition that who we are and what we have are gifts to be received and shared. Gratitude releases us from the bonds of obligation and prepares us to offer ourselves freely and fully for the work of the Kingdom."

Reason to Be Thankful: God's Love Endures

Time to stop, think, and reflect. It's also time to give thanks to God from whom blessings flow in the midst of hardship. Are things really tough? I get it! Is God still good and loving even if we don't understand what's happening? Absolutely! Get a head start as you prepare yourself for the events of the day. You'll be so glad you did!

Thanksgiving and His Love Endures Forever

Happy Thanksgiving! May it be wonderful- and thank you for reading all these years! Just a question- "Who are you thankful to????"  I'll just echo the words of the greatest  songwriter:

"Give thanks to the LORD for he is good; His love endures forever."

Psalm 106:1 (but found all through the Bible.)

Pooh and Piglet Give Thanks

“Piglet noticed that even though he had a Very Small Heart, it could hold a rather large amount of Gratitude.”

                            A.A. Milne

The author sure had the right idea! Even with its darkest moments, life is certainly something to be thankful for. God is so kind and so merciful to us- and He alone is deserving of our thanksgiving.

"Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation. Let us come before him with thanksgiving and extol him with music and song." Psalm 95:1-2

May your heart be light and full of joy and thanksgiving on this day!

Truly A Season For Thanksgiving

We live in a land of plenty. Think about it. Yes, there are places where people have little, but we have our freedom. Beyond even that, there is so much to be thankful for.

Are there blessings to be found in your life? Absolutely! But we may have to look deeper than normal to find them. I know this all too well as I tend to be a "glass have empty" kind of guy at times. Yet, God deserves our thanks.

Here's a few of the reasons I choose to give God thanks:

His goodness and His great gift of sacrifice in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ- The Ultimate expression of God's love for mankind, and the only payment in full for my sin- and yours. That's no small gift!

My family- Are things always easy in my family? No. Do we always treat each other well? Absolutely not. However, at the end of the day, we are a blessing to each other. A very real extension of God's heart to each of us. Even those of us that don't have faith recognize the blessing of family.

The real freedom we have in the United States- Especially in a Presidential Election Year. Let's celebrate this freedom! And let us celebrate those that have given their lives to keeping us free. Many love to badmouth this great country of ours, trying to bring change for the worse and trying to make us more like other more repressive governments. Our news agencies love try to increase readership by inciting trouble to sell advertising space, but at what expense do they exploit us? Be different and don't fall prey to their trap! Ours is still the best representation of freedom and peace and unity among all others. All you have to do is talk to people who came here from other places or to those who live overseas, and you will hear it for yourself.

Sharing with others less fortunate- Whether it is sharing food, faith, or in service, (how about in all three?), giving to others is a gift we also give ourselves- and it blesses our God- the One who gave it all to us to begin with.

May God bless you this Thanksgiving Day! Bless you with joy and peace and a home of love and gratefulness!

Live From Florida's Magic Kingdom

Hot off the press! Sent to me moments ago from my son, daughter-in-law and grandson visiting the Florida Magic Kingdom for our grandson's first visit. Fantasyland in all of it's day before Thanksgiving glory.

You have to be brave to take a toddler this time of year, but even in the busyness, there are quiet nooks and crannies to explore. Be our guest.

Crowds seem to be lower than normal- perhaps It's A Small World After All!

And goodnight...

Does Love Have A Color?

Happy Thanksgiving! In honor of today and all we have to be thankful for, I'd like to add another story from my friend Margo who travels to Rwanda. She travels because of the love of Jesus. The story she shared (below) was written by a young friend Marissa, who asks the question "Does love have a color?" It's a great, inspiring read.
-------------------
When I came into the sitting room one afternoon, she was sitting motionless on the sofa looking straight ahead, with her little legs sticking straight out in front of her.  “Who is this little person?” I asked myself.  I had seen her in the house only briefly since I had arrived at Pastor Stephen’s  home in Rwanda three weeks before for a 6 ½-week visit under the auspices of Hearts for the World International (HFTWI).

I learned she was the 3-year-old granddaughter of Grace and Jacki’s sister, Mary, and her name was Marissa.  I was hoping we could make a connection, but she wanted nothing to do with me. In fact, one evening when she was leaning over the edge of the loveseat to watch TV, I sat down at the other end to see what she would do.  Honestly, if she could have moved any further away from me, she would have fallen off the end of the loveseat!

Spoken language was not going to be very useful, either.  Although I greeted her in Kinyarwanda, I learned her native tongue was a Ugandan dialect, which I did not know at all.  She knew almost no English and very little Kinyarwanda, and my Kinyarwanda was at a first-grade level.

She would come into the sitting room every afternoon after her nap.  Unlike American children, she had no toys, books or games with her but instead would play with the various doilies on the furniture or the errant threads or ties on her clothing and be in her own world when the adults would engage in conversation around her.

My heart went out to her and I wanted things to be different for her, so I prayed about ways to bridge the gap.  It began with photos I took one morning when she and the children’s nannies and household help were singing along to praise music.  Marissa was very pleased with the photos.

Then I thought of using pictures, and, though many will vouch that I am not a good artist, I drew a picture of her and put her name by it.  When I showed it to her, a smile broke out on her face, and earlier that day she had reached out to touch my hand to find out what white skin felt like.  That was a big step for her and trust was building.  When we said good night that evening as she departed for Mary’s home, I spread my arms out wide, and with just a little encouragement from her nanny, we shared a hug.  I also learned to say “Marissa is a sweet little girl” in Kinyarwanda.

Other things came to mind to show her my love for her.  I bought her a slinky caterpillar, a toy just for her.  When it fell apart because it was given to the baby to play with, I must admit I was jealous for Marissa, because this was her toy, something that was to be her very own.  If she wanted to share, that would be a fine thing. She liveso touch my handictures, alvery pleased with thee  to bridge the gap.  It began with p in a culture in which so very much is shared, and I truly have no fault with that, but in my Western mind I wanted her to have her own toy, too.

Then a new thought came to me.  I bought a book, a child’s first ABC’s book with stickers to be pasted in by the English words and pictures.  That established  a pattern.  Every afternoon that I was not away we had our book time.  It was a time of sitting close and learning together, of laughter and love shared, and she was a good little student.  Every evening when it was time to say good night, I would open my arms, and we would share a big hug and we also started greeting each other that way.

One afternoon when she came in, I was playing cards with two sweet girls, friends of Stephen’s boys.  She spoke with them a bit sharply, and her nanny told me that she said, “You cannot have her. She is my Margo.” Hmmmm.

So, what did little Marissa remind me of and teach me?  God finds ways to bridge the gap between us and him, with his son, Jesus, being the utmost gift of all.  When we want nothing to do with him, and I definitely did not at an earlier time in my life, he will not give up seeking us and reaching out to us.  He very much wants to develop and maintain a personal relationship with us.  He wants to spend time with us, and as we come to know him and love him, we, too, desire to spend more time with him and want to  know him more.  He also is very patient, compassionate and creative and he is our advocate and is jealous on our behalf.  He watches out for us, wanting good influences in our lives and not neglecting time with him with too many other diversions, and his special book for us is the Holy Bible.

I am so thankful to God for his abundance of gifts, and especially, the tremendous gift of his love. I am so very thankful, too, for the special gift of a little girl named Marissa.  When it came time to say good-by to her, my tangible gift to her was her book, which I had been keeping in my room each day for safe keeping.  Marissa is now back in her home in Uganda.  I know that if we meet again, and I certainly hope we will, that we will open our arms wide and hug each other immensely.  If that is not to be, we shall do so in heaven.  Even more so, I know our arms will be open wide as we greet our Lord and he greets us , when  the time comes for each us who call him our Savior and our Lord to go to our eternal home.

Thanksgiving Before Christmas

Sitting here in a coffee shop, and Christmas music comes on. Decorations are on the walls and in the shelves, hanging from the ceiling. Why are we in such a rush to bypass Thanksgiving and move on to Christmas?

I think its part of our humanistic society. WHO would we be thankful to for the blessings in our lives? The truth is God looks over all of us and yearns that we would know Jesus. He makes it possible for us to have the lives we have, and yet all too often, we are quick to believe that we are the ones in charge of our own lives and that every good thing we have comes from our own hands. Perhaps this is why it goes against our nature to offer thanks. But let's try... its only two more weeks before we can get that Christmas music going!

Disney Blocking God from Website?

I've just got to imagine this is a mistake. And yet, knowing how politically correct Disney tries to be these days, it doesn't surprise me in the least.

A ten year old fan tried to post an answer to a "what are you thankful for question" on the Disney Channel blog. Well, wouldn't you know, her response was not received because it included the word "God" in what she wrote.

This is the way it goes. It's politically incorrect to mention the Almighty God that created the universe- the One who sent His Only Son, Jesus Christ, to die for the sins of man as a gift to give eternal life to all who would believe. Shocking that as we celebrate Thanksgiving and Christmas, we leave God out of Thanksgiving and Jesus Christ out of Christmas.

America Gives Thanks and The American Adventure

Thanksgiving Day 2014. There is much to give thanks for: home, friends, family, provision, and a country free under God.

On a Disney note, Imagineer Herb Ryman created this piece of concept art in 1979 for the American Adventure to be found in EPCOT Center. Its a beautiful piece, full of charm and drama, certainly a hallmark of Herb's best work.

So take a moment to give God thanks for all He has given you. It's one of the strongest exhortations in the Bible repeated so many times: "Give Thanks to the Lord for He is Good; His Love Endures Forever!"

More Than Turkey

It's Thanksgiving Day- and here's my list of what I'm truly thankful for. Of course, in no particular order. If that were the case, I'm thankful most of all for the gift of eternal life that Jesus gives to all who turn over their lives to Him.

November 22, 2012

Thankful for the Gift of Jesus!

Tis the season to be thankful! And I am. Are you? We have so much to thank God for! If nothing else, the gift of life. I'm still here, and so are you. God has placed us in this particular place and time for His purposes. We get to be part of His plan to introduce people to the gift of His Son, Jesus Christ, the only payment for our sins, the only way to heaven. What a wonderful opportunity- and I am thankful to be part of something bigger than myself.
