Karen Carpenter On the Radio

On a perfect drive to the beach, I'd be cruising in my convertible down Pacific Coast Highway with the radio blasting the Top 40 songs from 93 KHJ Los Angeles. What were your summer songs? Those days are long ago, but it doesn't mean you can't have your own Summer playlist to bring those memories back. Of course, for me, it's yesterday once more when the songs of Richard and Karen Carpenter are on. Sure, the duo's known for their beautiful melancholy songs which play magnificently against her rich voice. BUT don't let the great documentary Karen Carpenter Starving for Perfection by Randy Schmidt make you think it was all doom and gloom. The Carpenters had plenty of great tunes that were happy, upbeat, and playful. Here's a few of my 2024 Summer Playlist songs, those Golden Oldies that make me smile (in no particular order):

There's a Kind of Hush (All Over the World)- A guilty favorite of mine. You probably know the record. It's the ending layered vocals that pull me in and make me think "Is there nothing this woman couldn't sing?"

Kiss Me The Way You Did Last Night- Originally recorded for their 1981 comeback album Made in America. Much better than anything released on that disc, Kiss Me is fresh and romantic. It's hard to be immune to the recording's charms. Karen absolutely coos each lyric, and the music sounds contemporary with Richard giving it the arrangement it deserves. Perfect late night radio! The record finally made it to 1989's Lovelines disc... but sadly, so few people have heard it.

Love is Surrender- From the Close to You mega selling album. The duo's new to the ear of the public. You can tell they are having fun only just beginning their career. Carefree, heartfelt, and snappy.

Only Yesterday- The biggest hit single from 1975's Horizon album. They made it easy to think anyone could do what they were doing, but the truth is, no one could. From Karen's basement notes to Richard's complex sophisticated arrangements, this is one record that will never be remade by anyone else.

Boat to Sail- The first of three boat songs. "Yacht Rock" before it was a thing. This is my favorite song by the duo. I know, it's not dark, famous, or incredibly deep. But it is irresistible. Karen sounds right there next to you as the spray of the water hits your suntanned face. Richard's banging on the keyboard on the beach but playing with such abandon and freedom. It's one of a kind. They never recorded another song like it.

All You Get From Love is a Love Song- This was the one duo's record that deserved to be a hit-- a big one. It's sassy, it swings, it has a great beat, and like most of these on my list, it is a blast to sing along with! Unfortunately by 1977, the Carpenters were long past their mega hit making days. But I'd say they were making interesting records that were creative and even adventurous. The Passage album was a tough sell in the USA, but overseas, it has legions of fans tuning into Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft.

Sailing on the Tide- Released in 1983 after Karen's untimely death. "Leaving at dawn, after I'm gone, life will go on. Someone's gotta take my place running in the human race"- yes, those words take on a particular painful reality for the fan listening, but this Tony Peluso written song (the guitarist who made Goodbye to Love controversial) but the fun factor is pretty high. Makes for a nice break on the very melancholy Voice of the Heart album.

Top of the World-  The first of two country tunes on the list. All our favorite Friends loved this one, and so do I. (Man, I miss Matthew Perry and his comedic timing...)

Sweet Sweet Smile- Fiddle and banjo on a Carpenters record? A Juice Newton composition that's just too snappy, happy, and with a whole lot of twang. Karen's having a blast singing it and it shows.

Prime Time Love- Richard's background vocals are perfectly done on this record. Of course, Karen sounds great- she always does- but her brother brings just the right touch to this upbeat number.

Bacharach Medley- The 1971 "Tan" album was a monster- Rainy Days and Mondays, For All We Know, and Superstar are on it. This medley is a bright spot among the slower ballads. Even at 5 minutes in length, I'm left wanting more. Few folks wrote as many great songs as the late Burt Bacharach.

Our Day Will Come- This classic Ruby & the Romantics record is the one I am currently playing more than any other Carpenters record. If you thought the original was great, this version will slay you. It is the ultimate 50s/60s cover song done by our siblings who loved and respected the songs of the day. Find the fan made extended mix on YouTube. (It can be found here.)

Please Mr. Postman- STOP! This is another oldie and their last Number One single. You can slam it, turn off the radio when it comes on, or you can rock out to it and enjoy every bit of saxophone and guitar that gives it energy.

Make yourself a list and cruise down the highway while the Summer nights are so much fun. You'll feel like a kid again!

Top Ten Episodes of Friends

Any Friends fans out there? Or course there are! Joey, Rachel, Ross, Chandler, Monica, and Phoebe almost seem like real friends in our very disconnected world. In a world that needs a good laugh, this is the place to go. These are the favorites in our house:

1- The One With The Embryos- (Season 4, episode 12)- Monica's "That's not even a word!" shows how Courteney Cox can channel Lucille Ball effortlessly, but Phoebe's brother Frank, played by Giovanni Ribisi, closes the episode with a killer line that you'd never expect to hear!

2- The One Where Ross And Rachel... You Know- (Season 2, episode 15)- Yes, we do, and wow. All three pairings in the storyline show off incredible chemistry. Goofy Phoebe has some street cred processing it all, making Lisa Kudrow's character deeper than thought possible.

3- The One With The Routine- (Season 6, episode 10)- Doing Dick Clark proud? Nerdy Ross and Monica at their best. How does David Schwimmer do it without cracking up?

4- The One That Could Have Been, Part 1- (Season 6, episode 15)- Fat Monica is the worth the whole episode! The sweetness and innocence of the fantasy story is an insightful look at each characters depth and background.

5- The One Where No One's Ready- (Season 3, episode 2)- Drinking the fat and going commando was never so funny! This may be the episode that made Jennifer Aniston the "it" girl.

6- The One With The Morning After- (Season 3, episode 16)- Serious, compelling, and heartbreaking. This was the one that really showed what the cast and writers could do. A morality lesson with real bite.

7- The One With The Baby On The Bus- (Season 2, episode 6)- Slapstick and schtick. Matt LeBlanc and Matthew Perry steal the show in this mini-buddy flick.

8- The One Where Joey Moves Out- (Season 2, episode 16)- The balance of tensions between Joey and Chandler with the new love affair between Monica and Richard (her one real true love). What an episode!

9- The One With The Boobies- (Season 1, episode 15)- Brenda Vaccaro is brilliant and charming; Fisher Stephens maybe the most obnoxious character ever to appear on the series with the exception of Bruce Willis' Paul Stevens.

10- The One With The Reunion- Will we ever see it? It's been teased and teased, promised, and pulled back. This may be the year. Can you say "FINALLY!" while crossing your fingers?

Which episodes are your favorites?

Friends Again: The One After the Ten Year Break

Rumors of a Friends reunion have been coming ever since the show departed. Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Matthew Perry, Matt LeBlanc, David Schwimmer, and Lisa Kudrow, well this time, perhaps after years of failed television series and unsuccessful films,  these stars are probably ready to really do it. If it's true if it happens, one thing is certain: I'll Be There For You! (Note: Don't look to close at the image- seems it may be just another fan's wishful thinking.)

Fools Rush In: Love Does Conquer All

Due to a dropped transmission in the middle of Utah several years ago, my wife and I rented this little gem to pass the time away. What a great and sweet little film this is! For those you unfamiliar with this story, the plot goes something like this: Boy meets girl, boy sleeps with girl, boy and girl conceive, and after getting married due to her Catholic upbringing, boy and girl eventually fall in love.

Matthew Perry is his usual goofy but charming self, and Salma Hayek is her usual spicy, self-assured beautiful fireball. Yet, they make a great team- and it is the clever writing and wonderful play of two very different worlds coming together that make this a winning flick. Fools Rush In is PG-13 for a reason, so it is not for the kids, but it is still one of our favorites after a decade. Next time you want a sharp and funny romantic comedy, don't overlook this one while searching your Blockbuster bins.

Happy Friends Reunion

Didn't you smile just seeing this picture? Can't you hear the Friends theme song now? We welcomed this very lovable group of misfits into our home on a regular basis, and we quickly discovered we couldn't stay away. These folks were kind and warm, quirky, funny, and 100% dedicated to each other. Though they were far from perfect, we cheered for them to succeed, laughing most of the time, crying others.

As much as we loved them, their eccentricities reminded us of people we knew and hurt with: Chandler and his rotten self image and unfortunate childhood; poor abandoned Phoebe, trying everything and anything to find peace and purpose; Lovable, childlike man-whore Joey, who thought the solutions to his problems were to be found in endless sexual escapades; the ever popular Rachel- rich and spoiled, she struggled when things didn't go her way and she had to live within limits; and our majorly disfunctional siblings Monica and Ross- one such a control and neat freak that she drove most men away and the other so controlled by his emotions that he jumped from marriage to marriage to find value.

Thankfully, at the end of a decade, we got to see them grow up! Still far from perfect but now making more healthy adult choices. If they can do it, there's hope for all of us. Gotta love them- and I do- at least enough for late night TV reunions.
