An Easy Fix: A Revolutionary Idea for Walt Disney World's Haunted Mansion

We Disney theme park fans leave it to the Imagineers to build us some good old fashioned fun and some revolutionary attractions. Over at the great WDWMagic Boards, a discussion is brewing about the future of Liberty Square, the Hall of Presidents, and even the beloved Haunted Mansion. Some are saying that the mansion doesn't belong other than what the exterior looks like. I say, it's a very easy thing to fix: Just add a handful of Audio-Animatronic figures of Revolutionary War ghosts into the graveyard in the Mansion. An easy prompt from ChatGPT, and its created. Problem fixed!

 

Celebrate the U.S.A. at 250 Years at Walt Disney World

Today is American Independence Day. As we celebrate our 250th year , it is time to give thanks to the Lord who has blessed us as we have sought to honor Him. We've had it so good for so long. Yet, I do not think we honor Him as much anymore given the current broken state of distrust, corruption, and division in our politics and how we handle ourselves in the global community.

Yet, I think it's time to focus on our blessings once again. For our sakes as well as for the benefit of those around us. Thankfulness is a good thing!

As an independent tour guide, I travel all over the world. Believe me, there is no nation on the globe where its citizens are as free as we are in the United States of America! We're not perfect- not even close, but we can complain all we want about laws, our government, and our politicians. That's one of the greatest things about our country. We have a voice and we can use it freely. Others cannot do that. We have the wisdom of the founding fathers to thank for this, and we have the sacrifice of our military veterans to thank for keeping those liberties. 

Blessed are the people to whom such blessings fall!

Let's tie it all back to Disney, since this is a Disney theme park fan site. Imagineering great artist Herb Ryman created this gorgeous painting for the American Adventure.  Way back in 1979, EPCOT Center was finding its focus, and the Disney executives needed art such as this one to inspire corporations the world over to pour their funds in the new project. They also needed this kind of concept art to inspire travelers to send their hard earned cash to come to Walt Disney World when this second park made its debut. The park's Future World would draw them in as any world's fair might, but it would be World Showcase that would celebrate the cultures of other nations including the U.S.A.

Patriotism was not a new thing at Disney parks. It began with Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln at Disneyland, but the Imagineers really expanded on the idea when it came to Florida's Magic Kingdom. 

Here's a beautiful piece of concept art for the Magic Kingdom's brand new Liberty Square at Walt Disney World. I could almost do an entire blog piece on when reality is better than Imagineering art on this land alone! It is stunning in its beauty and design detail, making it my favorite land of all those in this eastern kingdom. Does the land hold my favorite attractions? No, not at all. But as the sum of all its parts, it's the closest Florida has to the elegance of Disneyland's New Orleans Square.

When plans for the Magic Kingdom finally came to the surface, the Imagineers included this tribute to the patriots of the past, those hard working, God-fearing men and women who sought freedom for all.  

With all the gorgeous details everywhere you look, it is a place of quiet dignity and peace. The stunningly sober Hall of Presidents reminds guests of the great sacrifices made by those who have gone before us. 

So, today, July 4th, let us thank God Almighty for shedding His Grace on us for 250 years!

Perhaps the Rarest Photo of the Magic Kingdom's Haunted Mansion

Welcome Foolish Mortals to perhaps the rarest photograph of Walt Disney World's Haunted Mansion. Taken around 1971, this is a rare promotional sheet from the Imagineering files. Giving the viewer the perfect look at the attraction from the now long lost Tom Sawyer Island. Plying the Rivers of America, these beautiful canoes and a trip into the wilderness was an opening day attraction not to be missed. Liberty Square was a perfect setting for the old abandoned mansion. Guests couldn't stay away once they discovered the 999 Happy Haunts in residence. The Imagineering masterpiece has drawn in unsuspecting visitors for over 50 years now... much longer number of years than those Cars at Piston Peak will ever reach.

The Return of Scrubs and How Disneyland's Haunted Mansion Affected Its Set Design

It's time for Scrubs to return to TV! Tonight- and tomorrow at Disney+/Hulu, the perennial favorite returns. But I bet you didn't know  that Disneyland's Haunted Mansion played a very key role in part of the set design for the series. (Love the concept art, by the way!) It's quite an interesting story. Zach Braff takes a look at it all in this very cool clip from Architectural Digest right here.

Design Detail: New Orleans Square

The beautiful New Orleans Square at Disneyland is the very best example of Imagineering art in Walt's original kingdom. The newer Galaxy's Edge may contain the most impressive E Ticket attraction ever, but the area is still developing and not worthy of the crown. Every single detail in New Orleans Square was designed to reinforce a story of elegance and exploration. The place feels alive. It's charming, layered, and seems lived in. 

This piece of concept art of the French Market area is by a Disney artist unknown to me. From the style, it's neither Herb Ryman or Dorothea Redmond, the two Imagineers that most influenced the look of this land, both on the outside and on the inside of the shops and restaurants. Everywhere you look, the design detail is lovingly crafted, and it shows. From the railings to the signage to the subtle changes in texture and color, nothing is left to chance, and it all works together seamlessly. When you toss in the beloved Pirates of the Caribbean and the Haunted Mansion, it's tough to name another land that is so enjoyed after almost 60 years. Just incredible really. New Orleans Square remains the ultimate Disney land in any park anywhere.

Imagineer Eddie Sotto Has Passed- and Here's One of His Amazing Disneyland Concepts

The great Imagineer Eddie Sotto had died. His work on Disneyland Paris' Main Street is unbelievable, but he also worked on many other projects for Imagineering. To honor him today, here's my favorite posts on some of his unfinished work for Disneyland and the ties that bind Haunted Mansion and Pirates of the Caribbean. It was first published on Easter Sunday many years ago.

Disney park fans, have you ever been to the real New Orleans? If so, the blend of charming mansions, lush vegetation, and incredible places to dine, shop, and listen to live music, make it a must see destination. So do the sacred places found in the wide variety of old churches and cathedrals. Of course, any place the sacred is found, the dark side of the spiritual world co-exists with the light. 

Disneyland's New Orleans Square is the epitome of Imagineering brilliance. When the brand new land finally opened at the park in the mid-60's, fans were amazed that theme park designers could create something so authentically charming and accurate, very faithful to the original. Here was a beautiful rendition of the city, calling visitors to explore its alleys and destinations. Watching the Mark Twain riverboat cruise the Rivers of America only added to the atmosphere.  

The masterpiece work still is Pirates of the Caribbean with its swashbuckling journey through grottoes, a burning village, and a bit of the ethereal. The opening of  The Haunted Mansion in 1969 filled out the land's roster, bringing some more obvious spirited fun for guests who dared to venture beyond its front door. Placed close to each other, Pirates and Mansion deliver the very best Imagineering has ever offered. In some ways, no other Magic Kingdom park delivers the Art of Imagineering as does this land. Even Tokyo Disneyland's mini land cannot compare to the original.

It's a credit to the old school Imagineering team that folks like Bob Gurr, Marc Davis, Herb Ryman, Claude Coats continued to look for ways to further deepen the richness of the experiences found at the park. For New Orleans Square, however, it took a next-generation great, Imagineer Eddie Sotto, to come up with another thrilling attraction for an area so limited in acreage. 

These pieces of concept art reveal Eddie's proposal to add a walk through attraction into the crypt of famed Pirate Jean Lafitte. Think of Paris' famed catacombs, and you will not be too far off the mark from was proposed but never built. The mystery and stories of his exploits are still told today. Imagine exploring the creepy tomb with decayed bodies, leading to unknown adventures! 

It had been quite awhile since I thought about this project. There's  an interview with him on the subject. Go to this Imagineering Disney post to see a number of photos and the story in full.  Walt himself would have been thrilled to add this to the park. He always loved bringing some history into his kingdom.  In his day, the parks were viewed as living artwork to be enjoyed by families together, not solely a tool to increase profits and tie into the latest movies for merchandise sales. 

I found this to be the perfect piece for today! Imagine exploring the empty tomb of Jesus the Christ, His crucified body risen back to life to the glory of God the Father. Proving Jesus' own words that He would rise again- fully paying the price for my sin and yours. Owning this as eternal truth deep inside your heart leads to untold adventures of spirit and soul. It was truly a very Good Friday! His story is told to this day all over the world- and in spite of any opposition, it has never been able to be stopped.

You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. 

But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:6-8) 

This video, above, is the absolute best visual presentation to be found. It's fairly recent, as fans of the attraction will know by observing the attic scene, but it's a complete tour with plenty of opportunities to stop the video and discover some secrets.

The Beauty of Disney's Westcot at Night

The long lost Disney Imagineering project that should have been built in place of Disney California Adventure. They call it Westcot. A new version of EPCOT Center improved upon by learning from mistakes from the past. It has always seemed that the Imagineers were at their most creative point when they were forced to deal with Disneyland's space limitations. Obvious case in point: Pirates of the Caribbean and the Haunted Mansion. Both attractions benefit from the restrictions they had to work around. Such would have been the case with Westcot. By design, the nations of World Showcase would have the be grouped into continents and the Future World pavilions reorganized into more effective layouts. This AI created image shows what could have been.

Disney Mansions and Manors- Frightfully Funny or Just Frightful?

The Haunted Mansion. Phantom Manor. Mystic Manor.  Each one certainly comes with its own plusses and minuses, but in their own ways, Imagineering has created a masterpiece that results in each being a true "E Ticket" adventure. Should a young child take a chance and explore what lies within?

One main consideration is the use of humor. When inserted into an attraction, it can take the edge off what could be a solely frightening experience. The levels of this vary greatly in each, making some a "safe" experience for younger kids, while for others, it may be much too dark, much too frightening. Let's focus on the humor levels as the main storytelling device.

At the Disneyland original, elements of lightheartedness come into play during the ride's third act, but not one single moment before. You find nothing humorous of the sort while waiting in line in New Orleans Square. We're talking serious business... particularly after dark. 

At Walt Disney World, a dash of humor begins in the queue, where cartoonish looking busts greet those waiting to enter the house on the hill in Liberty Square. That said, there's something about that eerie tombstone of Madam Leota that just delivers the shivers. 

In Phantom Manor at Disneyland Paris, there's really no humor at all until the graveyard in the outside gardens upon exiting the home. It's a very dark, quite sinister presentation while riding your Doom Buggy, giving a gruesome twist to the story that binds together all the elements of Frontierland as tightly as the noose in the opening scene. Parents should take serious caution before allowing their young children to ride. Snarling skeletal dogs and the Phantom himself keep the edge. The manor in serious disrepair has not taken its inspiration from the movie Psycho without reason. Beware.

On the flip side, Hong Kong Disneyland's Mystic Manor is full of fun and mischief from the very beginning! The colorful exterior gives guests a cue. Who cannot love Albert the adorable little monkey who puts the upheaval into motion? From any angle, the attraction is a winner that is repeatable visit after visit- and I've only seen the videos. Families of all ages should not miss this!

Will there be another incarnation of the Mansion / Manor at the soon to come Disneyland Abu Dhabi? Your guess is as good as mine.

Bet You've Never Seen These Pieces of Disneyland's Haunted Mansion Concept Art!

Disneyland's Haunted Mansion- a stellar attraction in New Orleans Square that has been bringing guests into the world of spirits since 1969. There's nothing like it! Imagineer Marc Davis created an enormous amount of concept art, and I bet you've never seen these two pieces. 

With their honor at stake, the two men above agree to a duel, and they're condemned to take action over and over again for all eternity. The Ballroom scene in the attraction may be the highlight of the whole experience, and it takes dozens of rides past it to see many of the details both large and small. 

 

Is this haunted room actually stretching? I thought I'd throw in this bonus piece of the original four posters just for fun.

Due to the investment of a very, very gifted team of first generation Imagineers- everyone from Claude Coats to Ken Anderson, X. Atencio, Harper Goff, Leota Toombs, Holly Crump, and perhaps many more unsung heroes, the long empty manor at the end of New Orleans Square continues to draw guests even after almost six decades. Incredible!

Hey Brickey! You Hit the Nail on the Head at Disneyland's Haunted Mansion

This guy is quickly becoming one of my favorite Disney fan YouTube channels! Hey Brickey (aka Mark Brickey from Adventures in Design) takes a dive into the world of Disneyland's Haunted Mansion and shows us what's wrong with Madame Leota's new gift shop. It's not the idea... it's the execution.

While we fans sometimes moan and complain about the boneheaded mistakes the money hungry suits make at the Disney parks we love, this video episode gives cold hard facts about why the structure that separates Tiana's Bayou Adventure from the Haunted Mansion (and New Orleans Square from Bayou Country) feels absolutely wrong. 100% totally out of place and out of scale. Check it out for yourself and support this guy. He knows his stuff!

A New Look at The Haunted Mansion

Often times, doing a deep dive into my Disney files will yield buried treasure. Such is the case today with this piece of rare concept art filed years ago, here depicting the Haunted Mansion as it would have appeared at the end of Main Street U.S.A. Yes, you heard that correct try- Main Street U.S.A.

It was the early 1960's and the great early Imagineer Ken Anderson crafted this piece at the request of Walt Disney himself. It's quite a piece of art!

There's a detail not so easily seen in this size, but if you click on it for the largest version, you'll find two young boys eyeing the decrepit old house with a strange mix of fear and intrigue. Just the right mix of emotions, I'd say. And I've seen those faces on kids today, decades later.

As with so few iconic Disney attractions, the Haunted Mansion is/was a perfect candidate to be placed in different locations in each castle park. And thankfully, it was! Of course, in Disneyland, its home is New Orleans Square and in the Magic Kingdom in Florida, it's found in Liberty Square. Disneyland Paris places the much darker Phantom Manor in Frontierland, but in Tokyo, the mansion is found in- surprise- Fantasyland. We should also add Mystic Manor at Hong Kong Disneyland, although it truly is a unique attraction. all its own. Should another Magic Kingdom ever be built with a Main Street U.S.A., I'd vote for the suits to resurrect this original idea and bring the project full circle.

Happy 69th Birthday Disneyland!

Happy Birthday to the granddaddy of all Disney theme parks- The one, the only, the original Walt Disney's Disneyland. Sure, Florida's Magic Kingdom is grander, Tokyo Disneyland incredible, and Disneyland Paris the most beautiful- but you, castle park in Anaheim, are the one that started it all! So Happy Birthday! And thank you, Walt!

Dark Universe is the One to Beat at Epic Universe- and Why Disney Can't Do It!

Frankenstein, Dracula, the Mummy and more. Things are going to get twisted and very scary and very interesting! By this time next year, theme park fiends will be screaming with delight talking about Epic Universe and especially the brand new land, Dark Universe. That is saying certainly something coming up against the themes of the other lands in the park. Think of the juggernaut that is Harry Potter. Then consider the rabid fan base 40 years strong of Mario Bros and Super Nintendo World. Even How to Train Your Dragon has families excited to visit the Isle of Berk. But Monsters will rule them all. Why? These characters' stories have been told for seemingly hundreds of years, tales as old as time, and they are the backbone of Halloween costumes for decades as well.

Main nemesis the Walt Disney Company can't fight this battle since Disneyland or Walt Disney World has nothing even close to compare. My hunch is the suits know it too. They'll blew their chance to include uber villain Dr. Facillier on the Tiana's Bayou Adventure remodel, and Rise of the Resistance aside, they just don't have the guts to do real bad guys anymore let alone real monsters. Cartoon monsters that gather screams or laughs, sure. Those that truly terrify? No. Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party at the Magic Kingdom is proof. On the other coast, Oogie Boogie Bash at Disney California Adventure in Anaheim has more edge but misses the horror mark too.

Let's be honest, no one does horror like Universal. Whether it is the brutal slasher type scarefest of Halloween Horror Nights or the more playful Monster Make Up show, guests love to be scared. Now, the classic Universal movie monsters like Dracula, Frankenstein, the Mummy, are on the scene, they've got to go to Universal to get it.

 

The main attraction in the area named Darkmoor will be the new rite of passage for those younger theme park guests. Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment promises nonstop thrills and chills with a nightmare of a story. Cutting edge effects, unforeseen lifelike- or is it deathlike - frightening characters gone beserk in a setting that will make riding Disney Imagineering's Haunted Mansion look like time spent at Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. Sign me up, he said trembling a bit.

The whole area will be fleshed out with otherworldly experiences, character meet and greets of a whole new dimension, and dining and shopping like nothing ever seen. Certainly incredible during the day but absolutely foreboding once the blackness of night settles in. Fans of classic horror now have another option to be scared, especially if slasher flicks are not their genre of choice.

I'm not even a big fan of the classic monsters franchise, and this has me very excited!

Could this year's D23 reveal Disney countering with a Villains land or even entire theme park? No. Robert Iger and company would appear to be playing catch up. And they are! For about two decades, the suits at Disney have not truly invested in building the parks. They've rested on their biggest cash cow, and now it is rightfully going to bite them in the wallet. And I hope it does- with a huge set of Dracula's fangs!

Jesus Says Judgment is Coming

Jesus himself says it's Heaven or Hell for each of us as we must give an account for how we've lived our lives. Let me say this clearly- I love writing about Disney and Universal parks, music- especially that of Carpenters- Karen Carpenter and her brother Richard, travel, and many other things. But this is important stuff. Jesus himself speaks of both Heaven and Hell in terms of judgment and His impending return more often than you'd first think when you read the Bible:

“Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life.  Very truly I tell you, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live. For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself. And he has given him authority to judge because he is the Son of Man.

“Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice and come out—those who have done what is good will rise to live, and those who have done what is evil will rise to be condemned. By myself I can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just, for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me." (John 5:24-30)

The great Apostle John, in his revelation of the future and the final judgement says this:

"Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. The earth and the heavens fled from his presence, and there was no place for them. And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what they had done. Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire. 

Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,” for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”

He said to me: “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I will give water without cost from the spring of the water of life. Those who are victorious will inherit all this, and I will be their God and they will be my children. But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars—they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.” (Revelation 20:11- 21:8)

Thankfully, this King Jesus also provides a way for sinful broken people- that's me and you- to escape an eternity in Hell without Him. Two very famous verses- but sometimes the second half is forgotten!

For this is the way God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world should be saved through him. (John 3:16-17)

Yes, me and you are guilty as charged- With the smallest lie to the evilest of actions, we deserve our punishment- and yet we're all given the same opportunity to turn to Jesus, change our focus in life, and start fresh in a way that pleases Him. No one is turned away. The Great Apostle Paul writes to the Romans who were part of the earliest believers:

"But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith that we preach), because if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and thus has righteousness and with the mouth one confesses and thus has salvation. For the scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.” For there is no distinction between the Jew and the Greek, for the same Lord is Lord of all, who richly blesses all who call on him. For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved."  (Romans 10:8-13)

It's stunningly straightforward. It's simple. It's life-changing one way or the other, for now and for all eternity. The choice is yours. Choose your own "final destination" (in the words of the classic Haunted Mansion spiel). The greatest part for the here and now is the joy, freedom, and sense of a fresh start you get the moment you give Jesus your life. He's not afraid of your past, worried about your present, or without a plan for your future. He has it under control once you give it to Him.

Let me say it again- I love writing about Disney and Universal parks, music, my family, lots of things- but nothing you will read on this blog is as important as what you just read right now. Nothing. And nothing you do will be as important as the decision you must make now that you know the truth.

Walt Disney World Magic Kingdom Attraction Posters: The Liberty Square Collection

I'll admit, this is a bit of incentive, but Imagineer Eric Chan's great new poster of the Haunted Mansion for this year's Epcot Festival of the Arts, made me rethink my timing of this post on Liberty Square's Attraction Posters. 

The most beautiful land at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom is the one that celebrates America: Liberty Square. Unabashed patriotism is something you don't find these days. Back in 1971, however, it was still ok to be proud of America- warts and all. 

Most appropriately, the land's attraction posters are grand works of art.

Yet, there are very few: An elegant looking The Hall of Presidents and the eerie and spook filled The Haunted Mansion have both made the cut. There should be more though, right? Each land in the Magic Kingdom is filled with attractions that deserve their own artistic advertisement. The attraction posters for the Magic Kingdom's Main Street U.S.A. can be found here, Adventureland's are here, and those for Tomorrowland are here.

It's a totally different case in other parks, particularly at Disneyland and California Adventure (look here) and then in Tokyo with Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo Disneysea. All of these have terrific posters! Just browse around this site to find them. Even the EPCOT collection here is quite amazing. So are the ones on the blog for Universal Orlando Resort actually. The Disney Haunted Mansion Attraction You've Never Seen

This one took some digging into my files. We all know that Disney's Haunted Mansion is one of Imagineering's finest achievements and an enduring fan favorite. At Disneyland, it takes it's classic look from the mansions around the South and is found in the park's gorgeous New Orleans Square. It's known as Phantom Manor in Paris. 

My guess, however, is that most Disney park visitors have seen it in its Gothic form at the Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World or in Tokyo Disneyland. But they've never seen it like this! This piece of rare concept art by Imagineer Ted Rich in 1967 gives us the very first looks at ideas for what the attraction exterior might look like for its inclusion in Liberty Square. In contrast to its earlier sibling, this version takes on a wood clad look and is more similar to its French cousin. Just imagine what's in those Disney vaults that we haven't seen!

The Hatbox Ghost Appears in the Magic Kingdom's Haunted Mansion

Just in time for Christmas but sadly missing Halloween, the quite infamous Hatbox Ghost makes his East Coast debut at the Haunted Mansion in Liberty Square. Imagineering announced his addition as sometime later in the year, and they finally delivered today. Where is he? The Hatbox Ghost materializes just after the endless hallway. In Disneyland's mansion in New Orleans Square, "Hattie" as he's sometimes known as, shows up just outside the attic before guests descend into the graveyard. 

As with every new addition and change, you can be sure the lines in the Magic Kingdom will be long for awhile! Just imagine the numbers a fully reimagined Journey into Imagination with Figment would bring!

The Kind of Stuff Screams are Made Of

Given the day, it just seemed right to take a peak at the beloved Disney attraction, The Haunted Mansion. I was one of the fortunate ones to be at Disneyland in August of1969 when the park's scariest ride made its debut. We were visiting with a friend from Mexico who had never been to the USA before, so of course a visit to Walt's park was a must! The brand new attraction was one that provided happy screams of adults and kids of all ages ever since. Other companies may try to duplicate the feel, but they just can't beat this Imagineering classic. (The two movies attempt to create their own spell, but what awful films they ended up being! I actually found the Eddie Murphy original the better of the two.)

When I finally visited Walt Disney World for the first time in 1975, I was thrilled that the mansion ad an entirely different look and feel! Befitting to its placement in Liberty Square, its gothic inspired design and beautiful greenhouse made it an instant architectural favorite. It would be years until I visited Disneyland Paris, the first being in 1997, when I would step into Phantom Manor. This visit would actually be our youngest son's first Haunted Mansion ride. Long before he'd see the originals in the Stateside parks. The darker tone, Western theme, and fantastic music made this version an instant classic all its own.

So far, I have not been to the Tokyo Disney Resort. Yet. Unfortunately, I keep postponing my trip for various reasons, but Fantasy Springs at Tokyo Disneysea may finally be what tips the scale. Japan's Disney mansion seems to be a bit different as well, with tones of red and green providing the creepy lighting scheme. Can't wait to see it myself.

The Haunted Mansion themed bar on the Disney Cruise Line's new Treasure ship, will be home to a brand new experience never before seen or heard or now, tasted.

The Haunted Mansion's tropical themed distant cousin, Mystic Manor, in Adventureland at Hong Kong Disneyland, may have an entirely different storyline and feel, but the thrills are there. Will I ever see this one? Probably not. I'd enjoy visiting Hong Kong and China, but their government is becoming more invasive and is now even scarier than any ghost inspired theme park creation.

Will there ever be another Haunted Mansion as originally designed? Never say never. Theme park guests can't get enough of the attractions that mystify, thrill, and scare!

What? Liberty Square's Skyway Station?

You might think this is some kind of April Fool's joke or a Halloween prank, but I can assure you it is not. Once on the drawing boards at Imagineering, there was a plan to place the Magic Kingdom's skyway station in Liberty Square and not in Fantasyland. Here's the proof: a piece if concept art from 1967 done by Imagineer Ted Rich. Of course, as we know, this windmill inspired version never materialized next to the Haunted Mansion. Instead, wiser heads prevailed. Proving once again that any idea can and should be considered, the original Walt Disney World skyliner almost ended up in another themed land.
