A New Idea Beyond Electric Autopia Cars- And It's a Perfect Fit for Disneyland's Tomorrowland

"Don't bury the lead!" This is the old newspaperman's wisdom that has lasted for centuries whether the content was put on paper or in digital form. News has broken that Disneyland, the one, original, Walt's park, will not only be keeping the Autopia in Tomorrowland, but it will be converted to electric vehicles. I think this is an excellent move for multiple reasons, but I will miss the smell of the fuel. It brings back so many great memories of when I'd visit the park as a kid! 

Can I say I hope they use the cars from Hong Kong Disneyland? And could they certainly make the track and surrounding areas look as inviting as that Chinese park? I hope so. 

This all led me to think there is a perfect addition to Tomorrowland that I've heard no one else mention yet. So, here it is:

Move Aquatopia from Tokyo Disneysea to the old Motor Boat Cruise lagoon next to Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage! It'd bring fresh energy to a land that was once " a World on the Move" and fill in a very dead space in the park. Not every addition needs to be an "E Ticket" to fit or to be successful- or even beloved. Just look at the Fantasyland Dark Rides at Disneyland! 

A move such as this would be unexpected, appreciated, and filled with charm. Go ahead, Imagineering. Pitch my idea! D23 is just around the corner!

Why a Tangled Ride in Expanded Form Deserves to Be in Epcot's Germany Pavilion

Frozen may be the latest juggernaut movie from the company, but I'd argue that Tangled is richer, more clever, and with equally beloved main characters. Plus there is no other scene in Disney animation as gorgeous as the film's lantern scene. The beloved movie deserves its own attraction on an epic scale. 

The cartoon / character infestation of Epcot's World Showcase started long ago when Gran Fiesta Tour replaced El Rio del Tiempo at the Mexico pavilion. We know without any doubt this is the direction the Walt Disney Company is taking with all its theme parks and not just the one that was supposed to celebrate cultures of the world. So, let's not waste time debating whether it's a good move or not. 

Apparently the executives at Oriental Land Company agree Tangled is worthy of its own attraction. In its beautiful new Fantasy Springs at Tokyo Disney Sea, it's Rapunzel’s Lantern Festival that provides the biggest tug on the heartstrings. The lattern scene highlighting the music of I See the Light gets me a little choked up. And I don't even speak Japanese. 

What would I change to make this an even better attraction?

1- Add in the villain back in. Removing the dark characters from attractions is a very bad move in the Disney worlds. That evil exists in the world is a fact, and we are not doing anybody good by pretending it does not. For all its amazing strengths, there's too little of Gaston in Enchanted Tale of Beauty and the Beast, and the attraction loses something in translation because of it. The payoff is just not as strong. In Tangled, Mother Gothel is the most complex and evil of all Disney villains, using her motherly charms to deceptively manipulate her kidnapped "daughter".  When our heroine Rapunzel eventually awakes from her Stockholm Syndrome, it's a powerful moment. 

2- Toss in the Stabbington brothers. Go into the Snuggly Duckling pub. Round out the adventure a bit. There's some swashbuckling bravado in the film. Make the most of it.

3- Bring back Corona and the people of the village, including the king and queen. Queue up the music, create a celebration, Let this scene be the set up before the quiet, intimate beauty of the lantern festival finale.

With these changes added, Imagineering would create a real must see attraction in the park. This could be the Pirates of the Caribbean of sorts in Epcot, a ride that could appeal to boys and play counterpoint to the sister focused storyline a few countries away... and for once an American park would get the better version of something from Japan!

Main Street Cinema Attraction Poster- Tokyo Style!

After decades of denial, its seems like real Disney theme park fans are finally beginning to acknowledge the truth:  When it comes to the same high standards Walt Disney believed in, be in stunning new attractions, guest value, or park and attraction maintenance, the Tokyo Disney Resort is the new gold standard. The love, attention to detail, and money the Oriental Land Company pours into the place is obvious! 

This includes honoring Imagineering history and their wonderful park attraction posters. Here's a great one for the Main Street Cinema! The star of the show is front and center- Mickey Mouse himself. Disney's reliable, ultimate leading man- and corporate symbol- graces the front against a nice golden yellow backdrop.

Perhaps the Cutest Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse Ever

Let me get one thing straight: "Cute" is not a term I use often. That said, this exact word was the very first thing I thought when I saw this image of Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse in front of a depiction of Cinderella Castle. I'm not even a big character guy, but there you have it. Where did I see this? Leave it to none other than Tokyo Disneyland to come up with the cutest Mickey and Minnie ever. Not only do they arguably have the two best theme parks in the world - and in top working order- they know how to make guest satisfaction priority number one. 

Where was this image? Inside the main queue area for It's A Small World. And that is just the beginning...

Living Out My Inner Indiana Jones

One of my favorite parts of being a private tour guide is taking people to new and exciting, even exotic places. As you can tell from this latest photo, I had a chance to live out my inner Indiana Jones. I never thought I'd ever do something like this!

The desert air was crisp and clean, but it certainly was very hot! 

My granddaughter asked if the camel was smelly. He was not. In fact, this gentle animal allowed me to stroke his neck and pat his hump. Normally, I don't post too many photos of my tours as they include other people. I won't invade their privacy. But this rare solo photo was one I had to include just for my personal satisfaction. Hope you don't mind the indulgence!

Moana Finds Her Home at Magic Kingdom's Legendary Fire Mountain

Are you a Moana fan? If so, listen up. After making its theme park debut in Epcot of all places, it seems the Polynesian themed Disney hit movie is set to be star of one more new attraction. Where? In a place it fits! Imagine that.  Over the very last expansion pad in the Magic Kingdom's already quite crowded Adventureland, Moana is rumored to take the area once designated for the infamous Fire Mountain. 

This rumor first hit about two months ago per Jack at the DSNY Newscast. 

Here's the Infamous Fire Mountain in three color variations. I'd been looking for a piece of Imagineering concept art for years. I found the concept art on the Neverland Files site and did a few quick fixes to highlight the details.

This was incredible idea would have also sat across the Seven Seas Lagoon from the Polynesian Village Resort. Not a bad thing to be looking at while you're on the beach waiting for fireworks!  

If you look closely at the art (and as always, click on it for the largest size), you'll see the project also went by the name Volcania.   

What is that front and center? Well, your eyes are not deceiving you. That is, in fact, the Nautilus submarine. Would that be a nod to 20K Leagues Under the Sea or a full-blown attraction? If you're thinking as I am that the suits at Disney would try to pass this onto the Oriental Land Company for Tokyo DisneySea, my guess is we are right.

Moana may be just the thing to bring some new adventures to the Magic Kingdom- and it could be in theme too. Maybe then the suits will rip out the misplaced Aladdin!

Design Detail: Tokyo Disneysea's Sindbad's Storybook Voyage

In the world of Imagineering, Tokyo Disneysea is certainly a standout when it comes to design detail. Everything from the landscapes to the pathways and structures oozes thoughtful creativity in order to provide guests with the most immersive experience.

Sometimes the design details are not in the smallest, least noticed aspects of the park. They may be in the things unnoticed or unrealized, those items we take for granted.
 

Attraction posters just because.

Look at the photo above from the very enjoyable "8 Bit Theme Park" site. Look closely. This particular design detail is large, very large. In fact, It's Mount Prometheus. The centerpiece volcano of the park is perfectly placed between the two colorful domes found in the Arabian Coast section. I guess I should say the placement of the domes is carefully designed to offer an incredible view of Mount Prometheus smack in the center. 

Attraction posters once more. 

The land itself seems very overlooked, although that could change with the opening of Fantasy Springs because guests will have to travel through it in order to get into the newest section of the park. If they can even get in. Those in charge of Disney's second park in Japan have made it very difficult to do so. They are moving to a caste system of guests. It's a very sad business move and quite elitist.

Sinbad's Seven Voyages or Sindbad's Storybook Voyage- which do you prefer? The original and darker seven voyages had vibes of Pirates of the Caribbean in its approach. The new version is more playful and kid friendly. Both beautiful and engaging in its own way.

Opening Day at Disney's Greatest Theme Park

Could there be a more beautiful, more impressive, more incredibly designed theme park ever built by the Walt Disney Company and those ultra-talented Imagineers? Probably not. (I know, you expected me to say EPCOT Center.) This grand opening attraction poster gives just a glimpse of the wonders found within. From the monstrously huge, fire belching volcano of Mount Prometheus to the huge temple which holds Indiana Jones, the lovely Tokyo Disneysea continues to grow and amaze. The attractions of Fantasy Springs can't come soon enough! Then I can begin to plan a visit once things settle down. Now with a Tangled boat ride opening, I just can't wait much longer or keep putting off a trip. To see the lantern festival in person- wow, just wow!

New Fantasy Springs Ad for Tokyo Disneysea Expansion

Just take a look at this! It's been appearing in multiple places all over Tokyo- a brand new ad for the Fantasy Springs expansion at the  already beautiful Tokyo Disneysea. Areas devoted to Peter Pan, the Frozen gang, and Rapunzel and friends will make for a very popular addition. 

Looking at the art, you can see the hotel in the background as well as Rapunzel's Forest, Peter Pan's Never Land, and Frozen Kingdom.

Will you even be able to get in? I don't know as it seems to be a tough thing to do unless you pay mega-yen to stay at the brand new Fantasy Springs Hotel or have some insider connection. If you want more news on the expansion from a great guy who lives in Japan, go no further than the You Tube channel of 8-Bit Theme Park Japan. They broke the news on this ad, and they will be a surefire source of all the latest information.

Imagineering the Design Details at the Tokyo Disney Resort

Lots and lots of Disney park fan sites (including this one) can get very serious at times. While I sincerely love all the insightful journalism, sometimes you just want to have fun. And let me tell you, if you are a fan of the Tokyo Disney Resort, one of the most enjoyable sites on the web is 8-Bit Theme Park Japan. 

The site's host is clearly a lover of Imagineering, focusing on both old school craft and newer attractions. With a warm presentation full of childlike innocence, you can almost hear shades of the wonder like those found in descriptions of Disneyland in its early years. A very nice change of pace from what's popular these days.

From the spectacular fan favorite Pooh's Hunny Hunt to the lesser known Pan Galactic Pizza Port, The Enchanted Tale of Beauty and the Beast to Roger Rabbit's Cartoon Spin, the video linked above touches on the best of the park's illusions. It's all in the details. Big or small, nothing is overlooked. 

Watch a few videos. You just might get hooked on these. I know I can't wait to see what comes next.

Walt Disney World Magic Kingdom Attraction Posters: The Liberty Square Collection

I'll admit, this is a bit of incentive, but Imagineer Eric Chan's great new poster of the Haunted Mansion for this year's Epcot Festival of the Arts, made me rethink my timing of this post on Liberty Square's Attraction Posters. 

The most beautiful land at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom is the one that celebrates America: Liberty Square. Unabashed patriotism is something you don't find these days. Back in 1971, however, it was still ok to be proud of America- warts and all. 

Most appropriately, the land's attraction posters are grand works of art.

Yet, there are very few: An elegant looking The Hall of Presidents and the eerie and spook filled The Haunted Mansion have both made the cut. There should be more though, right? Each land in the Magic Kingdom is filled with attractions that deserve their own artistic advertisement. The attraction posters for the Magic Kingdom's Main Street U.S.A. can be found here, Adventureland's are here, and those for Tomorrowland are here.

It's a totally different case in other parks, particularly at Disneyland and California Adventure (look here) and then in Tokyo with Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo Disneysea. All of these have terrific posters! Just browse around this site to find them. Even the EPCOT collection here is quite amazing. So are the ones on the blog for Universal Orlando Resort actually. Enjoy!

Rare Indiana Jones Adventure Concept Art

I can almost bet you have not seen this piece of concept art before! I most certainly had not, but what a find! The Indiana Jones Adventure must be considered as one of the crowning achievements of Disney Imagineering. Adding this major "E Ticket" to Walt Disney's first theme park, shouted loud and clear that Disneyland would not play second fiddle to the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World. Imagineer Tony Baxter and his team worked tirelessly to bring the famed explorer and his travels to life. And, boy, did they succeed!

This Imagineering concept art is pretty rare I'd guess- and I have many pieces in my collection, including a limited edition opening day piece that I purchased the Saturday of the Adventureland attraction's grand opening. Back when the wait was close to four hours, I rode it once- and immediately got back in line for another go round. My reward? A whole different excursion though the temple. Wow!

This piece is by one-time Imagineer Christopher Bradley. It's got an almost photo real quality to it, and it captures all the mystery and intrigue of an unforgettable attraction.

Can't wait for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny? Me, neither!

New Attraction Posters for Hong Kong Disneyland's World of Frozen

Wandering Oaken's Sliding Sleighs is just one of the new attraction posters recently released for Hong Kong Disneyland. The ride itself is a fairly simple reworking of the Magic Kingdom's fun little Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, but in Hong Kong, this will be part of entire land: The World of Frozen. These three posters have a unique feel to them, but they just don't say "Classic Disney" to me. What do you think?

Unfortunately, the headlining attraction is a revised version of Frozen Ever After from the Norway pavilion at Epcot's World Showcase. We know the Imagineers can come up with better, but the suits tie their hands for the U.S. parks where all too often, "good enough" is what gets built. Of course, recent additions to Disneyland and Walt Disney World prove they can give us the best of the best- when they want to.

If Disney park fans are looking for the ultimate Frozen themed land, they'd be better off waiting for Tokyo DisneySea's gorgeous Fantasy Springs. Like most all things Disney and Japanese, when the new land opens next Spring, it will have a one of a kind E Ticket attraction based on the beloved sisters. But that's not all. Peter Pan gets a brand new land with its own mega ticket as well as a whole new Tangled themed section. It pains me to say, but yes, things do seem to be designed better for the Japanese. 

I'm all for expanding the overseas parks, but we should never forget the idea for these are rooted in a uniquely American locale and mindset. He may be gone, but the homeland parks should always be the ultimate example of Walt Disney's Imagineers.

Disneyland's Atlantis Expedition: The Submarine Voyage Tomorrowland Deserved

Imagine a version of Tokyo Disneysea's Mount Prometheus coming to Disneyland. If you do some research and dig deep into Imagineering history with all those never built attractions, you'll discover an epic Tomorrowland mega- "E Ticket" that almost came to be: The Atlantis Expedition. With a large chunk of land from the Autopia as well as the  old Motor Boat Cruise area, what would be built in its place was worth the change. 

Tomorrowland was certainly overdue for a great and groundbreaking new attraction. It was also due for a major update in both theme and execution. Becoming stale, it no longer represented the idea of what could lie ahead. Discoveryland in Disneyland Paris took the futuristic theme and turned it on its side, choosing to create a land that looked at different aspects of what the future could be. Concepts from Jules Verne and H.G. Wells and others formed its core. With ideas from both the parks in Tokyo and in Paris, a plan began.

Concept art by the Imagineers boldly announced a coming attraction of significance, and rumors went wild.  It was almost announced to the public until an innocent little fish got in the way. Finding Nemo gave the suits a reason to insist on cross-promotion and more character invasion in lands that were never meant to be their home.

Since there had to be a tie in to an Intellectual Property, I'm sure Tony and other Imagineers asked the suits to consider the film was Atlantis: The Lost Empire. This 2001 animated movie wasn't a hit, but it was a pretty good film, and it would have made for an epic adventure. The Disney of old didn't stop at how big a success a film was if it made the right addition to the park. I don't blame Tony Baxter for this change in plans. The man always did the best he could to ensure the flavor and legacy of Walt's Disneyland while adjusting to the requirements of the management du jour flavor of the month. In a move all too similar to what happened with Tarzan's Tree House, he had to roll with the suits demands because he just wanted to save Disneyland's iconic, much loved Submarine Voyage.  

 

When this tarp was plastered on the Submarine Voyage tent, the Imagineers used it as a leveraging strategy to get the project a green light. As we now know, it wasn't to be.

The potential plan for this enhanced attraction meant guests would ride in the subs to a secret dark and dangerous destination. They'd be forced to disembark because something went horribly wrong, boarding an escape vehicle for the rest of an adventure. Proving no good ideas go to waste, this sounds more than a bit like the story arc for Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance. Guests would walk across two separate bridges into the heart of the caldera- and into a secret side building just hidden from view from the "mainland", making the Atlantis Expedition a one of a kind adventure. Indoors and outdoors and two ride systems with some part of the attraction being a walk through, all contained in a remote feeling piece of land. It could be easily marketed, proving irresistible to guests of all ages.

And a cool poster on top of it all!

Years ago, this insightful bit of information from the WDWMagic Boards came in to me. Much more information on this incredible plan and a copy of the proposed attraction poster:

"The poster was drawn by Josh Shipley and was suppose to be on the construction walls. Park management didn't like the idea and never put it up.

At the time, park management wanted to close the subs in order to send funding to Innoventions. They had no plans to put a new ride in. They just wanted to mothball the thing to save money. Unknown to park management, WDI came in and setup camp with the Atlantis Expedition sign. Park management saw the sign later that day and forced them to remove it. Later that day a flag with a trident on a blue background showed up. WDI left a few weeks later.

There is also the story about how Marty Sklar threaten to lay across Harbor Blvd if the subs were to be shut down without a replacement. He should have done it."

In his first decade, former CEO Michael Eisner would have had the guts to do this. I can't imagine Robert Iger would, and we know Bob Chapek certainly would not.  For that matter, I do not trust the current management to do a great job with any envisioned Tomorrowland for Walt's park. Leave it until someone with some heart and guts takes the reigns- if that ever happens.

Beyond Tokyo Disney Resort

A Disney loving visitor to Japan would do well to continue on their journey once they've seen Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo Disneysea. In many regards, the country is as beautiful and diverse as any of the themed lands and ports of the resort. Perhaps even more so.

Certainly a must is a visit to the ancient city of Kyoto. Step back in time and experience what it was like to live hundreds of years ago, The gorgeous buildings, narrow streets, secluded location create a sense of being far away from the busier cities like Tokyo and Osaka. Women in traditional kimonos walk the streets as they go about their daily life. This brings it all to life in a wonderful way! 

 

When the time comes for some java, step into the world's most unique Starbucks. That's all I will say! You'll have to discover it for yourselves. Trust me, you will be delighted by what you find.

Tranquility seems to live here. Not only are the surroundings very memorable, the people are gentle in spirit and quiet in tone, and the experience is unlike anything else you'll find in modern Japan.

Is This Any Way to Build a New Expansion, Tokyo Disneysea?

Is this a misfire? Tokyo Disneysea is widely recognized as one of the most ambitious, beautifully themed Disney Parks in the world. With the smoldering volcanic eruptions of Mount Prometheus as its centerpiece, it's difficult if not impossible to be in awe of what the Imagineers created. But this expansion named Fantasy Springs seems a bit controversial. 

How dare Tokyo Disneysea inject an entire themed land into this park, stuffing it with world class state of the art attractions focused on Peter Pan, Frozen, and Tangled? It could be a jarring contrast to the quite beautiful Mediterranean Harbor, the inspiring Mysterious Island, the exotic Lost River Delta or the somewhat historic American Waterfront. On the other hand, there doesn't seem to be too much difference between this cleverly hidden addition and Mermaid Lagoon or Arabian Coast.

A new take on the classic Peter Pan's Flight? Yes, please!

Perhaps it is the attraction line up that is causing a problem. How could they choose to bypass a clone of Epcot's Frozen Ever After for a one-of-a-kind "E Ticket" that will probably never be duplicated in Asia, the U.S., or in the Walt Disney Studios Paris expansion? Or maybe its the idea that the oft proposed ride system for Peter Pan is the same one used for Shanghai Disneyland's breakout hit, Pirates of the Caribbean: Battle for the Sunken Treasure. 

Moving beyond just the Snuggly Duckling.

I'm certainly one of the fans that is frustrated that the first attraction themed to Tangled is to be found in Asia and not at Disneyland or Walt Disney World. Can themed restrooms at the Magic Kingdom be all they can do for this terrific film? I can't be the only one that wishes to see that lantern scene fully realized.

Is this any way to build an expansion? Yes, it is! I'd trade it for any version of Toy Story Land or Pixar Pier or even Avengers Campus any day! Wouldn't you?

Mr. Toad's Wild Ride 2.0

Mr. Toad's Wild Ride is a Disneyland classic and a much beloved and missed attraction at Walt Disney World. But did you know there was once plans for a Mr. Toad's Wild Ride at Tokyo Disneysea? Yes, it was once on the drawing boards- but in a fresh way, different than what riders would expect. As I looked at Miceage's Yesterland article written by the always terrific Werner Weiss, I remembered that I had in my files a great piece of concept art for this attraction.

Before you get too excited about another unbuilt ride and get very disappointed, TDS' proposed Manhattan Motor Mania was actually more a tribute to sorts to the beloved Disneyland attraction in Fantasyland. (May the Magic Kingdom's double tracked, two separate adventure version Rest In Peace.) The artwork for Tokyo Disneysea's proposed tribute ride is the black and white piece of concept art at the top.

Toad in a new way... for a totally different park- The Magic Kingdom.

The plan was to have it sit in the American Waterfront in a subsection that looked like a bit of Little Italy. The basic plot line was the same but swapping out London and its countryside for New York City at the turn of the century. 

Like some good things, ideas are passed on. But Eric Scales did a great job working up a brand new version of Toad's adventure just in case Disney opens their eyes and hearts for a new journey. Take a look at his plans for an attraction at the Magic Kingdom or look here.

Tokyo Disneyland Gives Guests More Than They Deserve- Again!

Tokyo Disneysea is just the tip of the iceberg! Long considered the best Disney theme park ever, the Tokyo Disney Resort notches it up again with a brand new, rebuilt, and fully reimagined Space Mountain for the original Japanese Disney park, Tokyo Disneyland. Is it not enough they already have the Enchanted Tale of Beauty and the Beast, the original trackless vehicle E Ticket in Pooh's Hunny Hunt, and soon the only park to feature a full blown Tangled attraction? Apparently not. 

In contrast to Walt Disney World where they are continually nickel and diming customers, the Oriental Land Company continues to give guests groundbreaking attractions, top notch service, and great value for what is spent. This is the kind of experience Walt Disney wanted all his guests to have. And the Japanese resort continues to have great financial reports year after year after year. Does anyone see the correlation?
