Weird Carpenters

In what must amount to the strangest promotional ad for Karen and Richard Carpenter, this one for their 1971 concert at the G. Rollie White Coliseum on the Texas A&M campus has to easily beat out any competition. Is it hand drawn or silk screened? Hard to say.

One thing is certain, the Carpenters were hot on the charts! At the time of this concert, their song Superstar became their 5th Gold single in a row behind Rainy Days and Mondays and For All We Know. The upcoming Hurting Each Other would go to Number One on the Billboard charts and become their 6th to go Gold.

Just imagine paying only $8 to see a best selling musical act of their caliber! That is a weird thought!

Magic Kingdom's 1971 Grand Opening in Three Sketches

On October 23 through October 25, 1971, Walt Disney World held its Grand Opening for the Magic Kingdom theme park. It was a weekend long event marked by parades, singers, bands, and a host of speakers.

An uncredited artist created a series of renderings which were used to create a handbook of sorts for everyone involved in pulling off this spectacular event.

It was the absolutely perfect way to kick off the crowing jewel of the "Vacation Kingdom of the World".

Rare Photo of Disney World's Haunted Mansion

A rare look at Walt Disney World's Haunted Mansion circa 1971. This is a promotional sheet from Imagineering giving the viewer the perfect look at the iconic Magic Kingdom attraction as well as the canoes plying the Rivers of America. The beautiful and unique Liberty Square has never been duplicated in any other castle park, creating a lovely backdrop for the old abandoned mansion. The beauty inside the mansion, however, is more of the otherworld variety. It's a beauty that's drawn in unsuspecting visitors for over 45 years now.
