Galaxy's Edge: Our Disney World Trip Reservations are Changing Again

Calling all Blue Milk lovers! You can get that silky concoction at the milk stand shown in this new piece of Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge concept art. 

Or you can go all out for a full meal at the Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo just steps away. Either way, you can't lose!

The announcement of the opening dates for the highly anticipated lands brought a rush of changes to our previously booked reservations.

As God would allow it, we had booked our next Walt Disney World vacation for a stay just days before Galaxy's Edge opens. This trip is with our oldest daughter and her family- and it's a first time visit. And interestingly, her kids are HUGE Star Wars fans. We're already staying on the property, so I am now hoping that Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway opens along with the Disney Skyliner. Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run is a good start! It's not Rise of the Resistance, but it's better than nothing.

As I said, we made our reservations for meals already, so we are on our way! More on that later...

The Challenge Before Me

It is easier to serve or work for God without a vision and without a call, because then you are not bothered by what He requires. Common sense, covered with a layer of Christian emotion, becomes your guide. You may be more prosperous and successful from the world’s perspective, and will have more leisure time, if you never acknowledge the call of God. But once you receive a commission from Jesus Christ, the memory of what God asks of you will always be there to prod you on to do His will. You will no longer be able to work for Him on the basis of common sense.

These words above are from the well known Oswald Chambers. This amazing Scottish pastor knew how to keep faith real- practical, encouraging, and oh so challenging. Boy, I needed to hear this today. These words from his classic My Utmost for His Highest keep things in perspective. I must follow His lead and His call versus the other things that struggle for my time and work against my faith.

The 1960's: The True Disney Decade at Disneyland

Disneyland's Tomorrowland 1967 was a world on the move, and this very rare and stunning piece of concept art for the Peoplemover shows exactly what the Imagineers planned. Noticeably missing is the Rocket Jets, but the rendering was meant to highlight the new mode of transportation. Even if the Peoplemover train was once only two cars long.

It's difficult to admit as a Disney theme park fan, but the 1960's were the ultimate peak decade for Walt Disney's original Magic Kingdom. That's 50 plus years ago! There were projects both small such as adding Snow White's grotto to those groundbreaking new technologies such as Audio-Animatronics first debuting in Adventureland's The Enchanted Tiki Room. This was only the beginning of a wonderfully fruitful and innovative season!

Then toss in It's a Small World into Fantasyland straight from the 1964 World's Fair, a fan favorite that's still delighting kids of all ages. Next up was New Orleans Square, quickly followed by what park fans still refer to as the best example of Disney Imagineering: Pirates of the Caribbean. 

A brand new Tomorrowland followed, updating the land and bringing it into the future: Adventure Thru Inner Space took us into the atom while the legendary Carousel of Progress gave us a humorous look backward and forward. The Monorail and Skyway had new competition with the super popular Wedway Peoplemover providing yet another way for guests to get an overview of the land and its attractions.

The Real Disney Decade ended in 1969 with the long awaited Haunted Mansion on the banks of the Rivers of America. So many iconic attractions first came into being during the real Disney Decade. All under Walt's direction and leadership- when giving guests more than they expected was the mantra. 

Never again would Disney leadership give guests such an amazing decade for Disneyland Park. As good as it will be, I sincerely doubt the opening of Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge is the beginning of another amazing decade, even 50 years later.

Lazy Afternoon at the Polynesian Village

It may be a cold and wintery day in much of the States, but at Disney's Polynesian Village in Walt Disney World, the balmy island breezes help the waves of the Seven Seas Lagoon to sing a new song. This beautiful piece of art highlights the original plans for the resort, offering everything from boat to enjoying the water with tropical drinks delivered right to the shore. It's enough to make you agree with the prophet from long ago:

"Let them give glory to the Lord and proclaim his praise in the islands." Isaiah 42:12

BRRRR!

It doesn't look bad and certainly the snow is not too deep, but what you can't see is the temperature: Negative 2 degrees. The coldest morning we've had so far this year.

Cruising with Karen and Richard

For a recent birthday gift, while we were in California my wife rented a convertible for me so I could drive down Pacific Coast Highway. One of my absolutely favorite drives! (Wonderful wife- a true blessing from God!)

The day of our flight, I realized I forgot to pick some music for the disc player. I had two minutes to choose. Of course, I wanted some music from Karen and Richard Carpenter. 

I end up picking the albums A Kind of Hush, Karen Carpenter, and Lovelines. Why?

Hush was the release during my first year living in Huntington Beach, and it evokes many pleasant memories driving down PCH. Plus, it was the album out the first time I saw them in concert and when my sister and I met the duo back stage in Las Vegas. (Full story here.) And it led me to a huge personal transformation.

Karen's solo album- just because hearing it always puts me in a good mood. And I really like how happy and fresh Karen sounds in a jazz inspired musical environment.

Lovelines- because I had ten seconds left. (I should have picked Close to You album instead. )

I chose the Carpenters. What would YOU pick if you were limited the two minutes and three discs for your favorite drive? And where would it be?

Rare Disneyland Railroad Poster

Isn't she a beauty! I just love Disney attraction posters- and so do you. They are one of the most searched items on the Insights blog. This one's a pretty rare one. The silhouette of the Disneyland castle in the background sky is a very nice touch, too.

The Classic Red T-Bird

One of the coolest cars ever! This 1957 red two door Thunderbird rocks! From 1955 to almost the end of the 20th Century, versions of this make and model were the go to for drivers looking for a thrill and also for filmmakers who needed something authentic and eye catching to make a statement. Toss on some whitewalls, put the top down, and cruise down those American Highways!

Mexico Showcase Still Enchants

The Mexico showcase at Epcot is one of my absolute favorites! This photograph is a good example why. This shot was taken inside the grand pyramid- yes, inside! Look closer.

After entering the structure, we wander upon a delightful colonial village with filled with music, shops, and moonlight. Small boats glide on the lagoon waters past a smaller pyramid and a smoldering volcano, right into a journey into Mexicos' history and present. 

Oh, I mean they used to! When the boat ride was called El Rio del Tiempo it celebrated the rich culture of the Mayans and Aztecs and modern day Mexico. Now, as the Gran Fiesta Tour, it celebrates the arrival of the Three Caballeros on the day of their concert. Where's Donald? That's part of the fun for the little kids are Donald's friends search for him by visiting the resort areas of the country. It's cute and friendly, but it's not a cultural experience. It's all about the animated films and television shows now. 

There's a persistent rumor that Coco will take over the boat ride. Would this be better or worse? Can't really say, but regardless of what Intellectual Property Disney uses here, they can't take away from the splendor of the beautiful view of the lagoon, smaller pyramid, and the smoking volcano. Classic Disney Imagineering!

Don't Worry, Representative Omar! We Still Have Your Hate-Filled Tweets

So the congresswoman has deleted her offense tweets about Israel. That's ok- many of us have kept them on file in order to remind people of how offensive her anti- Semitism is! And her mockery of Christianity. Yes, the Democratic Party seems to be mildly if at all offended by this. So just to remind everyone who is reading:

Muslim congresswoman Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) posted the above tweet regarding Vice President Mike Pence, mocking his Christian faith by quoting singer Carrie Underwood's country hit Jesus Take the Wheel. Is this really ok? God forbid, the woman should experience some bigotry! The double standard is amazing.

Her clear hated of Israel is also on full display if you go back to her tweets of 2012. Democrats would do well to look into their own political party- Republicans as well and you and me too- to find the areas of our lives that are full of hatred. Imagine the uproar and calls for resignation if a Republican did what she just did. Yet, she hasn't even made the national news. Hmmm.

Ilhan Omar should be very ashamed of herself! It's her kind of bigotry that will be defended by those in her party, but nonetheless, she should apologize to our Vice President if not resign.

A Critical Look at Disney's New Plans for Epcot

Plans for a revised Epcot are rapidly moving along. It seems as if someone finally has a real vision for the once grand park or that the suits at the Walt Disney Company are ready to admit they are not willing to invest in the work necessary to continue on with its original vision to inspire as well as entertain. Just in case you've forgotten what that was, here's the words:

Epcot is inspired by Walt Disney’s creative vision. Here, human achievements are celebrated through imagination, wonders of enterprise and concepts of a future that promises new and exciting benefits for all. 

May EPCOT Center entertain, inform and inspire and, above all, may it instill a new sense of belief and pride in man’s ability to shape a world that offers hope to people everywhere.

Beginning with a brand new tree and flower filled, fully redesigned entrance, the Imagineers are finally removing the Legacy stones to a more appropriate place. This will make for more pleasant views as well as a much more welcoming environment. 

Old is new again.

When I saw the concept art for the new entrance as well as an additional piece of concept art for the transformation of Future World's Wonders of Life into a "play" pavilion, I wasn't entirely sure what to think.  But I'm clear on it now.

This design works both sides. 

Upon further reflection after really looking at the concept art and thinking about the current for us of the Walt Disney Company, I'm encouraged but not at all surprised by the design choices. 

There's a combination of character infusions in the form of topiary art and several nods to the original EPCOT Center. The acrylic fountain looks similar to the one that was there when the park premiered. The twelve flags along the entryway use the classic park logo. This approach was well thought out- and very, very strategic! 

The "money men" that run the Company are letting us know it's not our parents' park. By giving the entry Disney animated characters in topiary form, they are hinting at a new vision and direction, all the while pandering to original park lovers. By adding design elements we remember, they're increasing our emotional attachment to the place, and our willingness to open our wallets. 

Let's be honest, the suits have been using the same methods for years in order to sell merchandise. How many times do we see the beloved Figment and Dreamfinder and iconic emblems placed on pencils, mugs, sweatshirts and more just to move product? All the time.

Say goodbye to the Communicore hub as we know it.

And what exactly is that big brown box?

There is one major not so subtle change to Spaceship Earth: The entrance for the attraction. This is now moved to the backside giving guests entering from the front of the park a much nicer view than just seeing a lengthy queue front and center. Aesthetics and sightlines are seeming to matter in this reimagining of the opening scene.

Looking even closer, once inside the park, we see that Innoventions / Communicore no longer exists as we knew it. This is a very good thing! 

It's not a popular thing to say among EPCOT Center purists, but I am really looking to open vistas of other Future World structures from the park's main thoroughfare. This park is massive, but it's difficult to realize all that is in Future World. 

Now that the content of the old buildings reflects a constant failure to bring fresh ideas to light, a new approach to the space was needed. With the Western side building disappearing and a reinvention of the Eastern side, these changes will create a more welcoming environment. This makes it more appealing for guests to explore areas of the park they may not initially seem interested in. Better crowd dispersal and more exploration could be the end result. Of course, a stronger attraction line up would help too! They'd better get working on refreshing the curb appeal of these buildings, however! There's not a moment to waste.

Goodbye Festival Center / Wonders of Life! Hello Kid's play area.

Until this year's D23 or another announcement, the only other official hint of what's to come reflects changes to the Wonders of Life building. This is the continuation of Epcot's transition to Magic Kingdom 2.0, which began long before Frozen took over Norway's Maelstrom boat ride. International Culture is now replaced with Disney Culture i.e. Disney Intellectual Property in this park.

Given the Wonders of Life building is right next door to the new Guardians of the Galaxy coaster (which is sure to have a height requirement), I'm sure the suits thought "We'd better give smaller guests who can't ride something else to do, so let's put it there." 

You can almost 100% bet the decision to add a "play" pavilion in this form got approval in this manner- the same basic approach used to justify Marvel in the parks:

Statisticians - “Epcot needs an attendance boost.”

Public opinion poll - “ It needs to be more "Disney.”

Suits- “Well then, let's get more animated characters into the park. What properties are not big enough for their own major attraction?”

Researchers - “Wreck It Ralph, Up, Zootopia, Inside Out and a bunch of others.”

Suits to Imagineers- “Great! Get them into old Wonders spot. Throw in some character meet and greets. Make it all look good, but be sure to build it as cheaply as possible so we can constantly add the hottest movie characters and sell even more merchandise.”

Characters, characters, characters.

As far as I'm concerned, this new plan is not a wise or optimal approach. Yet, it will do exactly as they planned, bringing more kids into Future World. The plus side is this decision frees up other locations from turning into similar venues.

The official plans will keep developing, and there is certainly more to come. Ratatouille and Guardians are only the beginning of the new Epcot. 

The original vision of the park is disappearing for good. Partially this comes from the failure of Humanism which was the core inspiration for the park. Humanism results in hopelessness, loss of optimism. We see it in our society as people get more and more desperate and angry, needing entertainment to bring them any  brightness. Disney quickly comes to the rescue with reminders of a happier world- even if it is a character induced dream.

Finding Love in Alaska

Several years ago, my wife, and kids and I journeyed to Alaska for a wedding. It's a beautiful place so worth visiting. But that's not the point of this story.  When I think back, I am still so surprised by it all. But I should not have been.

This was a very non-traditional ceremony. As is common, the bride and groom wrote their own vows. They were sweet and tender, and even a little humorous - which fit them perfectly. The Maid of Honor spoke up to speak prior to the rings being exchanged.

She began her comments with something about “the god above and the goddess below", then she wished them (and I cannot give you an exact quote here)- the peace of Buddha, the _?_ of Krishna, the passion of Pele (Hawaiian goddess of fire) in their love life, and the _?_ of Thor (Norwegian god of thunder and war). Everybody but Jesus and the Cat in the Hat seemed to be included. Now, that is not to be disrespectful with my words. I choose them just to give you a full picture of her words and their shock value to my ears. I guess it's so common nowadays to be so "inclusive" but to leave out Jesus. (It's the state of our world in the West, but in Majority World cultures, Christianity - the real Biblical kind- is booming, with growth in even the most difficult places.)

Again, so these words were just the maid of honor's perspective. But she was chosen to be the maid of honor, so there has to be some commonality between the bride's viewpoints and hers. I have no idea what they thought about this "prayer of blessing" or anyone else’s thoughts at the wedding, for that matter. It was never even  discussed. But what about Jesus?

Because I am a man who prays, this entire experience challenges me as I do. How can I reconcile her words with those of Jesus? "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." (John 14:6)

Here is a very nice, well-meaning, loving woman truly believing in any and all gods of the earth- aside from the One True God who created it all. Who else at this ceremony is fully embracing this concept of many gods and goddesses? It's been done throughout the centuries. I remember studying Roman and Greek gods and goddesses in elementary school. Nowadays, at least in our local elementary school library, books on Islam and Judaism etc. are found in the shelves, but books about Christianity and Biblical thinking have been removed. Even this week. Why?

We are all searching for love and for meaning and order to our world. Jesus loves all of us and died for all of us, but not everyone will accept the truth or the Giver if Life. But let’s be direct and clear from Jesus' own words, no one will enter into heaven at their death by believing in and worshiping everyone and anyone but Him. Either He is telling the truth about who He is and why he came to earth in human form or He isn’t. Pretty simple. And pretty unpopular and very politically incorrect in his day and in ours. But they are His words, not mine. I didn't make the rules, and neither did you.

The Bible is pretty clear on these matters of multiple gods and earth worship. The apostle Paul writes:

“They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.” (II Timothy 4:4) and this one:

"We know that an idol is nothing at all in the world and that there is no God but one. For even if there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth (as indeed there are many "gods" and many "lords"), yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we live; and there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we live." (I Corinthians 8:4-6)

What instead if we worship nature and creation? That's pretty common as well. These verses from the book of Romans talk about it. Certainly nothing new in that:

"For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles. " (Romans 1:21-23)

So what are we to do? Love well, live kindly and respectfully, and speak wisely. And as those who follow Jesus, watch and listen for an opportunity to share the truth and to share what God has done for us. You can't separate the two. Even the great Apostle Paul who wrote most of the Bible's New Testament, shared what Jesus did for him and the only way to eternal life in Heaven.

In the States, most people know of Jesus- head knowledge, school book, even church trained stuff. Yet, how many really know and are intimate with Him in the way the Bible speaks of having a life-giving relationship with him? Heart knowledge? Knowledge of their sinfulness and of their need for Him? Many of us have family members and dear friends who do not know Jesus at the level He challenges us to. At the very depth of relationship that will one day lead us to eternal life with Him with or without Him. It's Heaven or Hell, and the price has been paid on our behalf. Jesus took on our sin and its penalty of eternal death to provide a way for us to come before God fully clean and forgiven. He died for us, and He was raised from the dead to prove to us that He is God eternal, proving the Bible to be true. 

I mean, we measure time from his birth! Something world changing happened 2,000 years ago!

By loving others deeply, honestly and sincerely, we gain the opportunity to share the Creator God who loves us. This is the best way to share the heart, the love, and the message of Jesus.

A Brand New Epcot?

Some excitement, some sadness. I don't want to immediately jump to conclusions, but I think it's time to say goodbye to what we once knew. Zooming in on the above image, the character topiaries are a giveaway to the new direction of the park.

Goodbye Wonders of Life. This new play area focused pavilion was hinted at for a long time, but with the introduction of Disney characters, the writing was on the wall. I'll chew on this more before I write the next post.
