Will Remy's Ratatouille Adventure Look Like This?

Look at these straight on images of the models once prepared for EPCOT Center's World Showcase, particularly the France pavilion. Notice how the backdrop "wall" looks three dimensional but in reality is only a flat wall rising above the main building? 

It may seem like a small question or even one that doesn't make sense. Yet, when you look at the back of Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge at Disneyland, Cars Land at California Adventure, or Expedition: Everest from behind at Disney's Animal Kingdom, it's obvious there is a newer philosophy behind these major buildouts versus the standard of Imagineers and company suits of old.

Sure, guests forget all about the backsides once they are inside the respective parks. But it's not like in the old days under Walt. And I'm glad early post-Walt leadership held onto his values or the iconic Space Mountain would look like something you'd find in one of those Chinese Disney rip off theme parks!

Imagineering Shanghaied in China

The latest news reported from Laughingplace.com, is that the Shanghai Disneyland project is set to be outsourced beyond Imagineering. Even though this was expected, it is quite a shame. This will be the first Disney resort handled by a group other than Imagineering. Ever. But, this is the new Walt Disney Company. It's profit and commerce over art. (See my post on this here.) Robert Iger again makes another culture changing decision. My rose colored glasses have been removed, as I mentioned in this earlier article. Disney's just another company- and they are proving it.

The Great Tony Baxter Debate

Editor's Note: Today for my 700th post, I present a tribute to one of the greatest "Second Generation" Imagineers, Tony Baxter. Remember, coming this week, Part 5 of my Animal Kingdom series!

Imagineer Tony Baxter is causing quite a stir it seems. And he may not even be aware of it! There's the debate going on over at Laughing Place's discussion boards where common Disney fans and some considered insiders are volleying back and forth about the merit of the man's work, the Walt Disney Company's politics concerning what happens in the Imagineering offices, and ultimately whether or not Tony will win out over Tom Fitzgerald for creative control over Disneyland.

Be he defender or divo or a bit of both, there are few folks in Imagineering department from the modern Disney era who have had such a great impact on the parks. You'd have to go back to the original set of Imagineers alive during Walt's day to find someone with such a passion and concern for quality when it comes to the Disney name.

Love Splash Mountain? How about the original Journey Into Imagination at EPCOT Center? Impressed by the delicately detailed beauty of Disneyland Paris? Can't wait to get a ride on Big Thunder Mountain Railroad or the Indiana Jones Adventure? Well, you have Tony and his team to thank for being right in the middle of these projects and many more.

Nowadays Tony is apparently put on hold by the suits. Seems his grand visions for Disney no longer fit the company's desire for small scale, low budget projects. Therefore, the man has been reduced to fixing Abe Lincoln, reopening the Sleeping Beauty Castle or revamping the Swiss Family Treehouse so that Tarzan can move in.

To be fair, the man's had his share of disappointments while at the helm: Disneyland's 1998 version of Tomorrowland was a major mishap, and his beautiful plan for Anaheim's original second park, Westcot, bit the dust due to immense budgeteering. In it's place came the bargain basement engineered and disastrously received California Adventure, from which he wisely distanced himself.

Understanding the politics, he shrewdly positioned himself as the guardian of Disneyland and a link to the creative genius' of the past. It is the place in which he belongs. Disneyland is better for it- and the fans should be grateful. If Tony was not keeping watch over Walt's park, it would soon end up looking like the Magic Kingdom in Florida! Just imagine Main Street U.S.A.'s unique shops being turned into one giant mall, the Cinema being removed, and the Opera House turned into a theater for Hannah Montana, and you get the idea of where the park would be headed.

Now, in tribute to Tony's sheer class and highly deserved influence with the halls of Imagineering, here is some concept art from a few of his defining attractions both praised and despised- in no particular order:

A Little Night Music, Please

While I was browsing around the web looking for something new and interesting, I came across an intriguing post on the LaughingPlace.com discussion boards.

Having always wanted to visit Tokyo DisneySea ever since its opening and being curious about its version of the Tower of Terror, I was thrilled upon the chance to hear some music from the attraction. Just go here and hear for yourself!

Walt Disney Studios Paris Under Construction?

According to two great sites, LaughingPlace and Disney and More, the Disneyland Paris Resort will see Phase Two of the buildout that started with the Studios Park and the addition of Crush's Coaster, Cars Race Rally, and Tower of Terror. But more work needs to be done to bring it up to classic Disney quality

Much is said about the additions to the Studios- and it needs it the most to bring it up to a full day, Disney experience. A trackless Ratatouille dark ride heads the list. What about the beautiful original park? Unfortunately, no one is saying much. Too bad, as this is the most gorgeous Magic Kingdom ever!

Compelling "Tales" from the Laughing Place

Just received issue #12 of "Tales From the Laughing Place". From the stunningly told history of Disney's Animal Kingdom on, this issue seems to be the perfect example of what a few truly talented Disney fans can do. Lee McDonald and Lindsay Cave lovingly capture the artistry they report in both words and photographs. The design of Disney's Animal Kingdom article and all its pieces will thrill you- including the above image on Beastly Kingdom. Great job to everyone involved.
