The Disney Dark Ride Series: An Introduction

What would a visit to a Disney Magic Kingdom be without a ride over Neverland or a journey through the Hundred Acre Wood? A lot less magical!

These attractions, although rather simple compared to The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, Pirates of the Caribbean, or Test Track, are mainstays at each of the resorts. Join me on Monday as I begin a detailed look at each of these "C" Ticket attractions. I'll start with an undisputed fan favorite: Peter Pan Flight.

Dapper Day at Disneyland

The folks at DapperDay.com have come up with great idea. Celebrate a visit to the Disney parks the way the Imagineers themselves presented guests: in fine apparel on par with what you'd wear to a Broadway show or a night out for fine dining. From Disneyland to Epcot, to Tokyo Disneyland and Disneyland Paris, February 5th, 2012 is the day to show at at your local park looking, well, dapper. It will be a nice break from the tank top and jeans that's become so acceptable. Wish I could go!

Tangled Lanterns Hit Small World

All I can say is "It's about time!" Tangled is one great Disney film- and it is long overdue for representation in the parks, worthy of more than just another character meet and greet. This Rapunzel tale should be a dark ride at the very least. For now, making its most famous and beautiful scene as part of Disneyland and Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom show "The Magic, the Memories, and You!" is a good thing. But it's not enough. Don't you agree?

Speaking of dark rides, on Monday, February 6th, I'll debut the first of hopefully many articles about them. The Disney Dark Ride series begins then. We'll start with Peter Pan's Flight. See you real soon!

Now here is an interesting pairing. Whitney Houston, the gal with the once golden voice, partners up with American Idol's Jordin Sparks to remake the 1976 film Sparkle that starred Irene Cara. Should be very, very interesting to see if there is any kind of return to greatness from Ms. Houston. Will she really play the hard working maid? Can she hold up to fresh faced and voiced Sparks? And will Sparks sell out her convictions on the big screen? I hope not...

It's a Beauty in 3D

The allure of 3D films is a contradiction in terms. I much prefer 2D and the old school way of telling the story. However, when I realized Disney was releasing Beauty and the Beast in 3D, I just had to go.

Beauty is my all-time favorite Disney film, with The Little Mermaid right behind it. Like Glen Keane, my heart resonates with the Beast, and I too know the power of Love's transformation. It is such a highly personal film for me, you would think I was involved in its creation.

Knowing Beauty was arriving with a new Disney favorite, a Tangled based short, made a night to see both all the more enticing.

It was a quiet Wednesday night, and we were the only ones in the theater. Not a bad setting for a date- and a chance to view the film as only a true lover of it could.

Yes, go see it for the Tangled mini movie. The whole concept is pretty clever, and it is great fun to see Rapunzel, Eugene, and the rest of the crew back in action. In spite of all the film's charms, nothing can hold a candle- not even Lumiere- to the 3D treat that is Beauty and the Beast.

No, I won't spoil it for you, but I will say by the end of the film you'll be itching to explore Beast's castle and the West Wing in particular at the Magic Kingdom's new Fantasyland. Now, I really cannot wait for it to open...

New Carsland and Radiator Springs Racers Image

Radiator Springs Racers looks fantastic, doesn't it? Love the waterfalls and all. Makes me want to rush to California Adventure on the opening day of Carsland. Be it Disneyland, Walt Disney World, or any of the international parks such as Disneyland Paris and Tokyo Disneyland, Imagineers from the Walt Disney Company put their heart and soul into the work they do.

Above is a terrific piece of concept art by Tony Baxter for the original idea for the Land pavilion at Epcot. It's not what was finally built, but you can sure see the inspiration for the Imagination building in it. (And Tony needs his own site, don't you think?)

Needed: One Little Spark

One little spark of inspiration. That may be all that's missing from Epcot these days. It is certainly easy to come up with ideas for restaurant and bar expansion for the countries of World Showcase, but the state of Future World is dismal. And that is up with the lack of new attractions for World Showcase anyway? Corporate sponsorships. Or lack thereof. No excuse in my book. The customer is king... or should be.

Let's whip up a little excitement by giving the paying guests some new adventures with Figment and Dreamfinder. Then, let's turn over the rest of Epcot to Imagineer Tony Baxter. He has a proven track record in creating amazing attractions. The whole place needs someone with a fresh outlook. And no more video screens please.

Goodbye My Friend

It's almost two weeks now since I learned of the news. One of my oldest and dearest friends passed away unexpectedly. Twenty-nine years is a lot of relationship. I'm still sort of numb as this wasn't something I saw coming.

Tomorrow, I'll be sharing at his memorial service. Below is what I will say. To honor him will be an easy thing. To not see him this side of heaven will not. Thanks for everything, Hal.

We’ve heard from several people about Hal and his history with them. Thank you all for sharing from your heart.

I could add my own memories as well. Hal and his family have been our friends for 29 years, so we have almost 3 decades of relationship to tell stories from.

It’s clear by looking around this room that Hal enjoyed different relationships with different people:

• Father and Husband
• Brother and Friend
• Pastor and Confidant

But Hal is most importantly defined as “Child of God”.

His son has asked that I share Hal’s favorite piece of the Bible. So, I am going to read it.

It’s from the Apostle Paul’s writing to the Christians in Rome.
I’ll begin in Chapter 8, verse 28.

Romans 8:28 – 39
28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. 29 For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. 30 And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified.
31 What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? 33 Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. 34 Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? 36 As it is written:
“For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.”
37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

God is FOR us, make no mistake!
In our world, sometimes Christians only focus on God’s coming judgment, our sin, and an eternity in Hell for all those who reject Him. That’s all true BUT…
But God is FOR us- and that’s a good thing!

And here is the story Hal liked to tell most of all:

In His great Mercy towards us, He sent Jesus Christ to pay the death penalty for our crimes, our sin, those actions and thoughts that break His heart, go against His wishes.

IN OUR PLACE, Jesus paid the price and saved all those who would turn to Him and away from their old lives. On the cross, Jesus paid, our penalty of Eternal Death in Hell. Because of this, we can live for eternity in Heaven with Him.

And that is where Hal is now. In the arms of Jesus Christ. Because Hal chose to embrace Jesus wholeheartedly as His Savior, His King, as God Eternal.

WHO or what could separate Hal from Jesus?
The Scripture here clearly says “No One!”

• Diabetes didn’t separate Hal from Jesus
• Cancer didn’t separate Hal from Jesus
• 911 didn’t separate Hal from Jesus
• Difficulties in Life didn’t separate Hal from Jesus!
• His own Sin didn’t separate Hal from Jesus

In fact, Let Me Remind You- We’re not here because Hal no longer exists! We’re here because Hal is now spending His eternity in Heaven with the God Made Man, the one he loved with all his heart! We’ll miss him here, but we can rejoice!

Let’s reread those last two verses, for these were Hal’s favorite verses in all of the Bible. Verses he clung to in times good and bad:

“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:38-39)

It is Hal’s prayer and it is Hal’s heart, that his friends and family would come to trust in Jesus- the only one who we can really trust with our lives.

Thank you for joining us today to celebrate Hal’s life.
You all were precious to him!

Heigl Pines for Grey's Anatomy

Reports are coming in that television and movie star Katherine Heigl has asked the producers to return her to the show that made her famous, Grey's Anatomy. Let me go the record as saying, I'm all for it! The original cast was my favorite incarnation of the show. OK, I do like Kevin McKidd's gutsy Owen, but the moving on of so many original characters made for a far lesser show. So, if Katherine can graciously return into the mix, let it be.

Joining the Cult

Due to a series of recent events in my personal life, I've lost my PC access, thereby bringing on a needed change. Questions I'd Really Like Al Lutz to Answer

I know that I'm just one of thousands that look forward to the updates from Al Lutz on MiceAge. Today's unexpected report delighted me in some respects (Starbucks! But I would prefer Caribou Coffee) but also left me with many more questions than were answered.

The report centered on the changes to California Adventure and Ariel's Undersea Adventure (Oh, no! Not the hair!), covered the Matterhorn, and revealed plans for a Disneyland Fun Map at the hotel. Cool, huh? Can't wait to see the map. There was also the expected Mad T Party discussion, Carsland news, and some hope for the Esplanade.

But here is what I really want to know- Will we finally see animatronics on Grizzly River Rapids? Are the shops in Paradise Pier getting a full makeover to look like the facades of the Games? Will the beautiful and charming Seasons of the Vine ever return to California Adventure? And how about a new in theme queue for California Screamin'?

Of course, I have an equal amount of inquiries about Walt's Original Magic Kingdom- Will we ever see snow effects again on the Matterhorn Bobsleds? What are the front runners for a new E Ticket for Disneyland? Will it be Tron's Light Cycles, something Lone Ranger themed, or an entirely new unheard concept? When will construction commence on the recently announced transformation of the Plaza Gardens?

And here's the biggest question of all- when will we see that long rumored third theme park?

Disneyland's Main Street Hub Transformation Debate

Seems as if the Disneyland Resort is getting so much love and care these days. By now, everyone that follows the Disney World knows about California Adventure's amazing transformation. The Disneyland Hotel has almost completed its update, bringing a whole new retro 50s meets 70s design aesthetic. Downtown Disney is a constant kaleidoscope, as stores rotate in and out. (I'll miss Island Charters!)

In Walt's original kingdom, changes abound as well. They're not as splashy but perhaps equally significant from historical perspective. Sure, the grand old gal needs some work, but maybe these changes on Main Street U.S.A. are not the places to be looking at just yet.

From this writer's perspective, the newly opened Jolly Holiday Bakery is a mixed bag. I love Mary Poppins from anyway you slice it, and the sequence referenced in the new restaurant's theme is my absolutely favorite piece of the film. In fact, I'm humming along the song in my head as I write! However, its out of time and place in an American small town of 100 or so years ago. On the plus side, the theming involves subtle, very subtle, references to the film or its time frame- and it is certainly a wonderful return to its original intent than a Passport Processing Center. With its gorgeous stained glass accents and delightful weather vane, it's a stunning building, a creative success, and an overall "neutral" in the larger scheme of things.

The jury is still out regarding the changeover from Walt's beloved Carnation Plaza Gardens and its bandstand into a Fantasyland/Tangled inspired performance area and meet and greet. Again, there are pros and cons, but this might be the time the cons are most weighty.

From the Walt Disney Company's perspective, this piece of land represents an under utilized opportunity for effective guest use. Perhaps it is even in keeping with the theme of the plaza. After all, the elegant- stunning actually- Plaza Inn on one end of the street and the Jolly Holiday Bakery on the other, one half of the hub is even divided between Main Street U.S.A. and access points to the various Disney lands. This makes the lovely Gardens primed for appropriate thematic transformation as it becomes part of the Sleeping Beauty Castle complex.

From those of you perhaps belonging to the Disneyland Historical Preservation Society,

(you can read my piece on The Disneyland Historical Preservation Society here), this loss of the look and feel of the area is a major one.

The history of this place sings and swings. If there is any great musical jazz or big band artist of the time of its debut, mid century into the 60s and 70s, they probably played at the place. Google it yourself and find an exhaustive list. It is quite an impressive lineup. Perhaps most importantly, there is no question Walt loved this area, and for that fact alone, die hard fans find it untouchable.

Certainly, as it stands now, the Gardens' days are numbered. I would think winter would be a great time to begin and complete the project, particularly before the relaunch of California Adventure brings many first time westcoasters to the resort. It's only a matter of time before we see the end result and the lengthy debates begin.

A Mad T Party, You Say?

In the old days, a Mad T Party was a Mad Tea Party! And there was no better place to capture it all than by taking a visit to Disneyland's Fantasyland! Here is a rare rending from Walt Disney Imagineering of the Alice in Wonderland attraction. This nice slice shows a few show scenes and a particularly good look at the innovative ride vehicle.

In a couple of months, California Adventure will host outs own Mad T Party, this time focused on the remake of the film made famous by Johnny Depp. I'm sure it will have its charms, but pretty soon, there may not be any childhood classics left to be remade by he and Tim Burton!

A Taste of Shanghai's Fantasyland

Go ahead. Call me a sucker for old school Imagineering attractions. I particularly love the attractions that were developed by Walt Disney Imagineering in the 1960s. That is not to imply that I dislike or don't enjoy more modern classics like Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, Test Track, Soarin' Over California or the Indiana Jones Adventure (which by the way, I would count among the best of the newer ones).

What is it about these classics of the 60s that hold so much appeal? Be it the cheesy but charming It's a Small World or the dark and mysterious Pirates of the Caribbean or the Haunted Mansion, there was a sense of wonder and fully developed atmosphere that was built in an attraction of such length. You could forget you were in a theme park and be in the story. Even with the best thrill rides or video based game attractions, you just get into the story's world before you are just as quickly yanked out.

This perspective is what makes me really excited for what the Company seems to be building in the soon to come Shanghai Disneyland. Think about it. Since I love Pirates, my favorite all-time Disney attraction, shouldn't I just love to explore Jack Sparrow's world on land and on sea? I can really enjoy a cruise on the Black Pearl after I've taken a voyage in the new Pirates attraction and explored the town where his adventures began. Sorry, but even a video screen with 3D cannot compete with these kinds of experiences!

This concept art for Shanghai's cruise in Fantasyland brings up another chance to really immerse guests in the stories of the kingdom. Imagineers of all ages and decades, everyone from Marc Davis to Tony Baxter and beyond, have provided their most compelling work when given a dark ride to design. This should be no exception by a newer generation of artists and writers and engineers. This small taste of what is to come is vague, but it looks like a terrific foundation.

If there is a misstep, it is a huge lost opportunity. There's only one chance for Shanghai to make a good first impression, and too much money at stake to lose when that's lost. It does not take a rocket (Jets) scientist to look backward to California Adventure, Walt Disney Studios Paris, or Hong Kong Disneyland to understand it never pays to not put your best work forward. Or to look at a park like Animal Kingdom and let it falter due to lack of continued work, losing guests and revenue from a whole different perspective.

All I can say is, "Do it right- and please give us some more tasty artwork soon!"

Stalled Out

Epcot's Test Track takes a cruise to a very long refurb, closing down until Fall of 2012. Blue Sky Disney has been gone for way too long. The poor little Studios park at Disneyland Paris can't get its Ratatouille attraction in gear, and the billion dollar redo of California Adventure seems to go on and on with its world of walls. What's a guy to do? Wait patiently. I've been stalled myself with a virus eaten machine, too much of a workload, and a mind currently lacking imagination. Maybe it's time for an overhaul...

Stop and seek Him. If you know and love Him, stop and thank God for the blessings in your life. Even under the most stressful curcumstances, He is present and offering you His Joy.

If you do not know Jesus Christ as Lord of creation and Savior from your sins, now is the time to invite Him to take over- and replace your stressed out life with peace and joy that only He can offer. God Himself designed things to work this way: that only through the confession of our sin against God and turning to Jesus will we ever find freedom, forgiveness, and new life for this earth and for eternity. Be blessed and know His love! Merry Christmas!

Christmas Changes and Challenges

"Transitions! Difficult? Yes, but it’s what God is constantly doing in our lives. He is all about transitions. The only things that are constant are God and change. We see it throughout ‘HIStory’. God is continually taking his people out of, into, or through transitions for his own glory and purpose. Remembering the lives of Abraham, Moses, Jeremiah, Elijah, Paul and many others we see that God never really left these men in their comfort-zone for very long. Their lives reflect the fact that God is always orchestrating our lives, our ministry, and our families for what is coming upstream. During these times we can often feel confused, fearful, and sometimes rebellious. We want clarity, but we must let go of clarity... and trust.

Two thousand years ago, God orchestrated the greatest transition of all time. Jesus entered the world, became flesh, lived and died for us so we might have a relationship with Him. This transition changed history and the world forever.

“What is going on here?” “This can’t be!” “What are we going to do now?” “How will I tell my family and friends?” How can God do this, at a time like this?” “Things were going so good!” “Now what are we going to do?” “Just look at what is happening here, it can’t be good!” “Why doesn’t God do_____?”

Haven’t we heard ourselves say these things? And yet we see that God is the Faithful One who will provide, and give us vision and strength for the near thing, even when the distant is clouded. Now, after 10 years in overseas missions, we find ourselves in this season of our lives, waiting on the Lord, again letting go of the need for clarity and remembering His faithfulness in all the times of uncertainty in the past.

Last month we attended the National Missionary Convention in Atlanta, and interestingly, the pre-conference topic was ‘transitions’. It was very enlightening and encouraging to be reminded, “Those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength.” The term wait has the meaning of ‘twist’. We must twist ourselves around the Lord, and take on His character and be strengthened.

Why Christmas Beats Halloween at Disneyland

Sure, it is just an overlay of an attraction and one of many offerings at Disneyland in California over Christmas- but what a terrific overlay it is! It's a Small World Holiday charms even the Scrooges in the crowd with its cheerful blend of Christmas tunes and decor. The exterior of the classic all-white building stuns the viewers with its thousands of colored lights, and the crowds begin running into the queue the moment the sun begins to set. It truly is magical- and nothing offered at the park for Halloween even comes close.

Disney's Burbank Backlot

Decades before Hong Kong Disneyland and Shanghai Disneyland were even a glimmer in the eye of forward thinking or greedy corporate executives, the Disney Backlot project in Burbank was quickly moving from concept to reality. The beautiful piece of concept art shows what could have been: shops, restaurants, etc. Think of Anaheim's Downtown Disney with a few small scale attractions through in for good measure.

The style would have been a combination of the current Grove shopping center found by the Farmer's Market in Los Angeles with hints of classic American nostalgia and a bit of riverboat flair like the old Empress Lilly at Walt Disney World. Right in the middle of Burbank. It would be a "lifestyle center" long before the concept was ever coined. Throw in the Disney craft of marketing and showmanship, and Disney's Burbank Backlot had the potential to be a smash.

Cold feet, city politics, and too many other projects on the boards ended up being the kiss of death for the idea, much to the disappointment of Disney fandom. It would have been a very pleasant place to spend an afternoon, adding a little class to the area as well as being a great incentive to remind folks to visit a full fledged Disney resort.

Frontierland- When the West Was Simply Wild

Love these old souvenir books! This great little map is from my 1957 Disneyland guide. Doesn't this Frontierland look like Davy Crockett's (or wannabe Davy Crockett's) dream? It sure was mine! My mind races back to others times and places just looking at it, and my imagination starts to work in full color. I know I wasn't alone in this bit of play. The old The Mine Train Thru Nature's Wonderland and its Rainbow Caverns certainly had its impact on John Lasseter and the design of Carsland's Radiator Springs Racers.

One aspect I really enjoyed about the younger years of the park is that Disney allowed you to create your own adventures. Sure, stories were told- and often times they were of a company film- but especially in Frontierland, we were encouraged to exercise our own imagination a bit. There we could explore caves, an old fort, the Indian village, or even an entire western landscape by mule or train. Paddling a canoe or taking a cruise on an old steam wheeler took us places where we didn't know what lay ahead. Great fun!

There was something very hands on about the place, be it shooting rifles, searching for the perfect coonskin hat, or hanging on to the ropes while crossing those pesky barrel and suspension bridges of Tom Sawyer Island. Nowadays, hands on tends to mean "hands on the controller" as Toy Story Midway Mania and Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin take prominence at the Disney parks. Sure, those rides are fun, and the parks need this kind of variety, but the simple pleasures of simpler times also have their place. Yet, these kind of smaller attractions are no longer built. With their absence, we are also missing a part of homespun Americana and the opportunity to embrace our own imagination.

Tales from Rwanda: A Cow in My Classroom

Editor's Note: A good friend of mine travels to Africa regularly as part of a mercy team to provide care and schooling for the children of Rwanda. Below is the first of several notes from her adventures. It's not Disney's Animal Kingdom but the real thing. Enjoy!

Kamate’s Primary School, started just two years ago, consists of two rooms made out of mud bricks, a tin roof, and trimmed tree branches of varying sizes for seats. The windows and doors allow complete access to the natural elements; there is no glass in the window openings and no actual doors to keep out the wind and debris.

Currently it consists of four primary grades – P1, P2, P3 and P4 - as well as pre-K and Kindergarten and its 500 students range in age from four years old to mid-teens. Yes, that’s right – 500 students, which means they attend half days. P3 and P4 hold their classes in the school building. The other grades meet under their assigned trees.

Sydney and I knew that we would be teaching English at Kamate, but we didn’t really know what that meant. We thought we might team teach and brought a number of teaching materials and other supplies with us. However, God had other plans. I ended up solo teaching - mostly P3 and P4 - the better part of the school day. However, one morning I was assigned to P2.

I was bent over writing the lesson on the blackboard, when a student made a noise and I heard something being thrown off to my right. At that point I looked up and immediately saw a cow on my left, my very near left, less than two feet away- and then not just one cow, but several others just behind the tree that held up the blackboard. These are not your ordinary mild Jersey cows, but Watusis, which have long, curved horns. To buy time and keep my composure I said, “How nice! They want to learn, too!” It was just then that the herdsman made his appearance and drove his cows away. I continued on with my lesson.

I absolutely loved teaching the Kamate students. For me it was one of the highlights of not only the 2011 trip but of all three times I have been in Rwanda. But a cow in my classroom! Who would have thought it! That’s real life in Kamate, and I wouldn’t have changed a thing. I sure look forward to teaching there again.

Yes, the Chris Evans / Hugo Weaving blockbuster beats out Johnny Depp and Jack Sparrow's 4th journey with the Pirates of the Caribbean. Kudos to Marvel for giving us a real hero we can cheer for- one with a heart of self-sacrifice, boldness, and a determination to fight evil versus embracing it. Not something we see everyday where the lines get blurred, and the end justifies the means.

From Disneyland to the Top of the Pop Charts

Here's and old photo I really like. Richard Carpenter and songwriting partner John Bettis at Disneyland's Coke Corner. Long ago and oh so far away, years before he and sister Karen Carpenter started Carpenters and their reign at the top of the Billboard charts in the 1970's, Richard and John Bettis played on Main Street U.S.A.

No doubt according to Richard that their boss, Vic Guder, was their inspiration for the song, Mr. Guder, from the Close to You album. Nonetheless, Richard and John would go on to write some classics that would be among the Carps great hits: Top of the World, Yesterday Once More, Only Yesterday, I Need to Be in Love, and the opus Goodbye to Love. So, here's to getting the boot at Disneyland. It can open to doors to a great career!

A San Antonio Christmas at the River Walk

Yes, it is absolutely true. The River Walk in San Antonio is stunning on a Christmas evening. The sounds celebrating the season fill the air with a Mariachi twist. Restaurants pump out the delightful scents of Mexican treats, children and their parents are caught laughing while they wait for a cruise on the river, and everyone is having a good time. In a world where family is increasingly devalued, San Antonio is one place where celebrating takes on a warm heritage all its own.

From Tower of Terror to Soarin' Over California

In all the deserved excitement involving the billion dollar extreme makeover of Disney's California Adventure, there's still this small little area for kids filled with the charm of old school Disneyland circa 1955. Critics will argue, but Flik's Fun Fair is chock full of great visuals, rich theming, and kid friendly attractions very similar to what was found in Fantasyland at opening. Sure, a nicely themed dark ride would have made the area complete. It's certainly not Radiator Springs Racers or even Ariel's Undersea Adventure, but Flik's is a nice place to spend an hour. This Pixar pleasure world for little ones is especially enchanting in the evening and well worth your time as you stroll from The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror to Soarin' Over California.

A New Species of Theme Park Posterized

Oh, the promise! Oh, the potential!

When Disney's fourth Florida theme park debuted, this beautiful poster of Disney's Animal Kingdom was found for sale in the shops of Safari Village. Thanks to a friend, this image was sent to me, in appreciation for my extensive series on the creation and evolution of the park.

Imagineer Joe Rohde's vision for this gorgeous place could be seen here in its condensed glory, but it was only a fractional picture of what was originally imagined. True, Beastly Kingdom would never appear, but in its place came the thrills of Expedition Everest and the soon to come controversial Pandora land from the film Avatar. All this proves once again, that in the Disney universe, the winning concepts that succeed from blue sky ideas to concrete and steel reality are only proving the survival of the fittest.

Relaxing Lake Buena Vista

Here's a real find! It's not too often that we see concept art for Walt Disney World's own real town of Lake Buena Vista. Long before the city of Celebration, the small community of Lake Buena Vista remained an enjoyable respite from the crowds. During the planning stages for Walt's east coast spectacular, the Imagineers were hard at work defining green spaces, pedestrian areas, hotels, and backstage facilities. Far more than just the Magic Kingdom theme park!And here's a small glimpse of their work.

Personally, this image conjures up the Walt Disney World of old. In addition to the "East Coast Disneyland", there were quiet spaces for rest and relaxation far from the folks running from one attraction to the next. A week in Florida there meant more time to enjoy the extensive recreational facilities and the shops and restaurants. I have sweet memories of chilled Strawberry Soup and the quiet garden shop at the Village.

As much as I love Epcot and enjoy the newer parks and water parks, there was a sweet simplicity then. It was easy to be anywhere at Walt Disney World and think you were in the middle of an entirely different one. Now, with the roadways covering almost every area of the property, busses perpetually transporting guests to each corner, and four world class theme parks to explore, it is hard to remember how it was at the beginning. Time marches on.

Walt Disney World Aerial Tour

Wizard of Oz Meets Tomorrowland

Is this Tomorrowland? Is it really?

This piece of Imagineering art from an unknown Disney artist, is a proposed entrance and look for the park's first version of Tomorrowland. Quite a difference from what was first seen in Disneyland! Is it just me or does it seem as if the Emerald City from The Wizard of Oz was the inspiration here?

Of course, many versions of this area of the park have now been realized with, hopefully, another to come one day. Tony Baxter and company gave it it's best shot in 1998, but we all know how cut budgets and shortsightedness killed the Rocket Rods, creating one of the biggest disappointments in recent years.
Perhaps Tron's light cycles will one day race around the area. Might take the work of some real Imagineering wizards.

While visiting Mission San Juan Capistrano with my wife, mother-in-law, and my youngest daughter and her husband, we were surrounded by beauty. My daughter is quite the sharp photographer, and quickly assessed the views, snapping this shot almost as an afterthought. For something taken so quickly, I found it to be simply beautiful. One by One by One by One

For the last several years, there's a very popular book out called The Tipping Point by author Malcolm Gladwell. The basic premise is quite intriguing, as it is a research project of sorts on how trends are started, viruses are spread, etc. The byline reads, "How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference". Truer words could not be spoken. Gladwell gives many examples of how the choices of one person can make an impact.

Just take an objective look at the early criticisms of Disney's California Adventure when it opened in 2001. Instead of rehashing such well known- and correct- observations about the park, the reality was longtime Disney park fans knew an inferior product when they saw it. It wasn't supposed to be Disneyland, but it wasn't a quality product either. There was a breach of trust and integrity in place of honor and honesty to this next generation park.

Conversely, when it comes to the remake of California Adventure, each new and individual park project that is done with excellence from start to finish has been met with enthusiastic response and the appropriate rewards it brings. World of Color has brought in the masses, and the soon to be finished The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Undersea Adventure, Buena Vista Street, and Radiator Springs Racers will no doubt do the same. Excellence is recognized and rewarded.

Walt Disney seemed to understand this fact inherently. His earliest creations may not have been the blockbusters he would later experience, but he never skimped on quality. Oswald was not Mickey Mouse, but he was not designed with any less heart or elegance. Disneyland begat Walt Disney World, and under the leadership of his brother, the complex in Florida continued on with the company's tradition of excellence one project, one decision at a time. The public knew they could count on Walt and his company to produce any entertainment product and that it would be available at a fair price. His reputation (and that of his family and company) was always at stake, and Walt did not underestimate the potential of his core audience.

You are no different than Walt Disney. There is only a difference in the individual situation, unique skills, and personal contacts. But the same opportunity to live with integrity and excellence is available to us. Think about what is important to you and live for that. If you stumble around because your decisions lead you astray, you can always start over, rebuilding your life and reputation one decision at a time. It is akin to building good habits and breaking ones you hate. One by one by one by one, we can and do make a difference. One person making one deicision to do right multiplies itself.

Mahatma Gandi's famous quote, "Be the change you want to see in the world" is no less significant because it is well known. Now, I am not a follower of the Hindu faith. I am a follower of Jesus Christ, God himself made flesh who came to the earth to die for the sins of all mankind and rose from death to prove His power over Hell. His disciples, those who walked this earth with him, believed in him and gave up their lives for him, turned the world upside down. Their amazing message is timeless and revolutionary.

Their choice to follow Jesus Christ resulted in following their convictions- and one by one by one, as word spread, individuals exchanged broken lives for freedom and hope in him. Christianity became a worldwide faith because of the One who first acted in obedience and in integrity- and then spread one by one because of the power He gave his followers as they did his work and spoke the truth about Jesus. It continues to live to this day, be it in postmodern America, secular Europe, or in Third World countries where the good works of man accompany the Good News of Jesus. Sure, it unfortunately doesn't always look like it did in the early days- and please do not get me started on that topic- but the message and character of Christ remains a life changing one to this day.

But back to you, back to me. Will you be the one, the one who chooses to live with integrity instead of taking the short way out? Will you be the one who is the example of living honestly for the common good when others look out only for themselves? Will you be the one who chooses to live knowing your decisions will impact many people as well as impact your reputation? As for me, I am trying. This is my heart: to live a life that honors my God and reveals who He is as others watch me. Sure, I do and will fall flat on my face at times. But as I humbly come to him, by his power, I can start over again one decision at a time. One by one by one.

Or more depressing for a guy who seemed to have it all but was overtaken by his inner demons? A strange tale made all the more blue by the children he left behind.

First Time Magic at the Disneyland Resort

Disneyland and California Adventure in one day. Something I would not normally try to accomplish- especially when taking a first timer to Disneyland as well as taking my wife for her first ever visit to California Adventure. That said, it was the second week of October after all, the crowds were supposed to be light, and everyone wanted to see World of Color. So, we took our chances... and it paid off handsomely.

Our plan was to start early in the day and arrive at the park gates right before opening. Unfortunately, a dead battery delayed the plan, so we showed up almost one hour after Disneyland opened it gates. No matter, this was where purchasing our tickets the night before helped out. We were still able to park in the outdoor and lowest lot, right next to Downtown Disney. Just in time for the less than spectacular scenery during the short tram ride.

Off to a good start as Indiana Jones Adventure was a walk-on. But without many effects working. Then in fast order, it was on to the Haunted Mansion Holiday and Splash Mountain. Again, no line to speak of. Nice. Seeing the park this empty gave everyone a chance to take in the beauty of the landscapes around us. The Mark Twain Steamboat slowly made its first journey, the rafts to Tom Sawyer's Island did the same, but the Columbia Sailing Ship stayed in the dock.

In spite of the benefits, I am ready to visit the Disneyland Resort at another time of the year. The last three visits have been in October, and although the crowds really are lighter, I would like to see the original version Haunted Mansion as well as the park without its Halloween decorations. Jack Skellington is fun, but the creepier standard version is still the better of the two.

Wandering through New Orleans Square was the moment our newbie began to discover the art of Disney theme parks. He loved the detail and the fact you could walk into the lands and not just observe them as merely set dressings to the attractions. It was his favorite area. He does have good taste! Having Pirates closed only whetted his appetite for another visit at another time.

A quick snack in Critter Country yielded a giant cookie to beat all cookies- white chocolate chunks, butterscotch chips and more- all in one huge, hand sized shape. A perfect energy booster while we cruised over to Star Tours, our first real sized line of the day.

Even though I'm not a big Star Wars fan, my son in law is, so it was fun to watch him relish all the queue details and the journey itself. I expected the 3D to feel clunky, but it didn't, and I was very happy to enter the Pod Racer competition. Space Mountain Ghost Galaxy was next, and again, I'm ready for the original. Traditional spook houses are not my thing, so I much prefer the timeless storyline of the attraction the way it debuted. Tomorrowland has not aged well. Enough said.

We strolled into Fantasyland before heading into California Adventure. For an newbie, we expected our first timer to really be wowed by all the technology and special effects of the big rides. But, in a show of strength and charm for the original seventeen attractions to be found at Disneyland's opening, Mr. Toad's Wild Ride was a huge hit. The detailed landscaping in Fantasyland was stunning, only adding to the charm of the courtyard by all the dark rides. We couldn't get into the others without a long wait, but he found Toad's to be worth the ten minute wait. I'm always charmed by Small World, but my son in law was unimpressed by our happiest cruise, as his grandmother made him sleep in a room filled with porcelain dolls whenever he visited her. To him, the attraction was more horror filled than the Mansion. A quick stroll through Toon Town, and we were on our way to the construction zone named California Adventure.

It was almost time for our Soarin' Over California Fastpass, so we walked next door, deciding to stop at Taste Pilots for some lunch. The maze of walls is quite the sight. It ends in a lackluster area for now, but once all the work is complete, I think Buena Vista Street will be beautiful and make a great first impression. What was the original area called? Sun something or other? ;)

Aside from a few places in Disneyland, the food at California Adventure is just so much better!The Wild Bleu Burger continues to be a favorite. Perfection on a plate! Everyone enjoyed their lunch and the sun, which was now in full bloom. We then jumped into our line for my favorite attraction here. I never tire of the technology that makes Soarin' the smash it is, but the film does look pretty dated. Time for digital. But you just gotta love the soundtrack!

The next ride of the day was something I just couldn't wait for. It's not very often you get to ride a new Disney attraction for the very first time. That said, The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Undersea Adventure was a serious disappointment. This was the ride I had to see, and it is a movie I absolutely love. (Who cannot love a movie about a father who lays down his life for his child?) The attraction, however, was a solid "D" Ticket and certainly not the "E" smash I had hoped it would be. (Nor is it fair to call it a "C" dark ride, either!) The Imagineers seemed either strapped for cash and space or were short on inspiration. The end result was a short little dark ride somewhere between Peter Pan's Flight and the Haunted Mansion.The building itself is pretty, but it has too much stucco and not enough detail either inside or out. I did like the seashell floor of the queue and the sea urchin finials. Once on the ride vehicle, the beginning of the attraction was pretty encouraging. Scuttle makes an appropriate storyteller, and the going underwater effects were quite effective. Seeing Ariel and her treasures delighted me, but the "Under the Sea" showstopping scene just stopped significantly short of greatness- like most of California Adventure 1.0.

What was missing? More of everything- more sea life, more lighting detail, more marine vegetation, more underwater effects, more wow factor. Just more of everything to make it spectacular. The ride was fun, but it was just slightly more than passable. This central scene should have been filled to the max with creatures singing along and detail piled upon detail, making the ride a definitive must do again to see it all. (It's part of makes me return to It's a Small World over and over after all these years.)

Ursula's lair was extremely well done, and she moved and spoke just like the wickedness that she is. My favorite Disney villain absolutely stole the show!Overall, though, something was amiss throughout the journey. As we traveled into "Kiss the Girl", I knew what it was that kept me underwhelmed- we were just too close to the scenes, they were much too small, and they went by much too fast. There was no grandeur of sets as found in Pirates of the Caribbean or the graveyard in the Haunted Mansion. No sense of endlessness that the ocean has. Even Madame Leota had a larger, more expansive, room in which to enact her evil compared to Ursula. And the Little Mermaid ride was all the worse for it. Making use of multiple levels would have given more space to tell a complete story instead of an abridged version. The closing farewell was nice, but again, cramped, and it was made all the more obvious when the clam shells stopped more than once down the very short corridor that revealed the outside world long before it should have.

Mermaid isn't a must see for return rides on the same day- except for us hardcore Disney Geeks. It is not the centerpiece attraction of the revitalized Paradise Pier that it should have been. The ride is certainly not a failure; it just feels incomplete. Kudos, however, to the Disney Imagineers for Sebastian and Scuttle. They move so well!(But why didn't Flounder have some speaking role? He's my favorite of the three supporting characters.)

Exiting Mermaid, we moved through Paradise Pier and the renovated area surrounding Goofy's Sky School. It's a vast improvement over the horrible design of its predecessor, but let me say it straight up: Looking across the bay from Mermaid, I just hate Paradise Pier. Hate it. Hate it. The "wooden" supports and height of California Screamin' are just a gaudy, tangled mess, making the area seem extremely cheap, colorless, and heartless. Have a lot of love for the ride experience, but not the look of it. There is a reason Disney coasters are designed not to look like one. I know we're stuck with the Pier, but refreshed area or not, it ranks as one of the largest aesthetic failures in Disney park history. And if I can be very snarky here, the "lush park"replacing the Maliboomer isn't.

Back to basics. Grizzly Rapids was another hit. My wife had not been to California Adventure ever prior to this first visit, but having seen all the Florida parks and the gorgeous Disneyland Paris, her standards are high. She loved the wilderness representation, but found the park "just ok". It was better than she thought it would be, she but couldn't imagine it without the additions since it first opened. My son-in-law summed it up best by saying, "It's fun, but you can tell they just didn't try as hard here as they did with Disneyland". I found this to be quite an astute observation from a Disney virgin! We headed to the Blue Sky Cellar before going back across the way. The plans for Carsland and Buena Vista Street convinced everyone they would return one day. We all agreed Radiator Springs Racers will be a well deserved smash.

The construction zones made exiting the park a challenge. The new entrance is quite attractive, but then, I have always liked the Pan Pacific gates of the Disney-MGM/ Hollywood Studios. With Carsland and Radiator Springs Racers on its way along with Buena Vista Street, the original pieces of the park are even more exposed for the lusterless spaces they are. Grizzly Peak Recreation Area aside. Even Condor Flats seemed, well, flat. (And let's just get rid of ElecTRONica at the Backlot. It ruins what little style there is to the area.)

Heading back to over Disneyland, we mixed up the attraction roster and visited the Jungle Cruise, Tarzan's Treehouse, Matterhorn Bobsleds, and the winner of the day for our first timer: Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. Yes, Tony Baxter's masterpiece of an attraction was his favorite of all he experienced. It is a fun ride for all ages. It's just right in so many ways: great detail, thrilling but not terrifying, and most of all, laugh inducing- just what Disneyland is all about! It's our family's favorite thrill for good reasons. Sure, Pirates is awesome (although closed for this visit), but Thunder Mountain is deserving of the title of best coaster in either park. Multiple rides were in order, and it was the only attraction we rode more than once. The last seats make for a terrific ride.

Before heading back to the newer park for dinner and World of Color, we stopped to see Mr. Lincoln. Another wonderful old school attraction we love, as we are a very patriotic family, proud of America and the old fashioned values that made us great. After a quick stop at the Disney Gallery to buy a Kevin Kidney/Jody Daily designed Mad Tea Party tea cup, the sun was beginning its descent, making Main Street and the stroll to it from the rest of the park, especially lovely. Disneyland's charm takes on a whole new feel at dusk, and in this sense, there is no other park that exudes the spirit of the man himself. Always leaves me with a small lump in my throat.

Crossing back over, the Wharf was our destination as some wanted Chinese and some Mexican for a quick bite. Again, the food is great at this park. My Orange Chicken bowl was tasty, and I have to say, my wife's Carne Asada was just as good as that from my favorite Mexican restaurant back home. We had more time than we thought, so we walked through Bugs Land and Hollywood, stopping to ride Monsters Inc. An absolute walk on all the way to the cab. Both impressed our first timers for their kid friendliness and charm. And let's be honest: Bugsland looks great at night. (Twilight Zone Tower of Terror was not a draw, nor was Screamin', as my daughter is pregnant and the other two don't like dropping rides. I love them both, but I wanted to be a good guide to everyone else, so I was ok skipping them this visit.)

Time for World of Color. We got to the Red zone, taking our place among the crowd. I watched Paradise Pier lit up at night and realized this is when it is the most attractive. Too bad most of the rides close for the water show! I think a cruise on the Fun Wheel would take on a special thrill if the water mist hit you at different times as you went around. Steve Davison's craft is at its peak with this show, and everyone agreed it is not to be missed. The three of us that have seen Epcot's Illuminations found World of Color almost as good. That's saying a lot! Main difference being the scale and scope of the area and the impressiveness of the countries of World Showcase being part of the show make Florida's attraction take the lead spot. Mickey's head cannot duplicate that blessing of size and what you can accomplish with it there! While the pavilions are elegant and add to the show, Mickey's Fun Wheel is also effective, but much like Paradise Pier, it screams for attention with its in your face design.

The water show ended our evening. We walked out through the wilderness of the forest and into Disney's Grand Californian. The moonlight made the area particularly beautiful. It would have been terrific to be staying in that resort overlooking that part of the park. The prices, however, are beyond this average man's salary, and if I had it, I'd rather use it to stay at the Polynesian Resort at Walt Disney World.

Speaking of Walt Disney World, our first timer ended the day by stating he now had to go to Florida. Seems for all the missteps of the California property, there's still plenty of magic there. At least in his eyes- and I so agree!

It Really is a Small World

We were just strolling around Denver's Park Meadows shopping center, looking for a few gifts. Of course, Christmas is appearing everywhere- I mean, it is not even Halloween yet, what do you expect!- and we stumbled into Nordstroms. We had just been talking about our recent trip to Disneyland, when we saw this in the Children's Department. The sales lady laughed when she saw us take a photo. We explained we had just been to Walt's original. She commented she liked the work of Mary Blair, likes the It's a Small World ride, but was very thankful the song wasn't playing in her department as she couldn't take it all day long. Pretty funny. Some things are universal I guess...

A Quiet Coastline

Not your typical beach glamour shot today. During most of our recent trip to the land of LA, the skies were over cast everytime we got even close to Newport Beach or Laguna. It certainly wasn't swimming with people, but the fact that it was empty and calm made it a delightful time. There's something about me being at the beach regardless of the season. It's a time I always feel the power and presence of God- and Jesus himself feels so close to me here. I know he is everywhere, but the roar of the ocean always calls me to him.

Autumn leaves fall, and my thoughts turn inward as another summer of my life passes away. In a bit of introspection, I am realizing I can let time slide away while I am propelled by the busyness of life. Too many things to do, people to see, projects to complete.

Summer's always meant a youthful, playful time, where the days seem endless and the nights are filled with pleasure. Dinners alfresco, nighttime walks, children laughing at fireworks, fires on the beach and more. How I wish those days would never end! But summer's charms also keep me from thinking of eternity and what really matters.

Will my life reflect the heart of God for the people around me? Will those who see me see Jesus in me, His Holy Spirit guiding and directing my life, my words, my actions? Will I finish well- and make my life count for something greater than just years spent on earth? So many questions. Summer's gone, and it's time to refocus once again.

On this day many years ago, East Coast fans of Walt Disney finally had their own playground much closer than the original kingdom, Disneyland in California.

So many happy memories from my first visit in 1975 to my last visit in 2009-

Dining at the California Grille and watching the fireworks explode over the Magic Kingdom

Watching my then preschool aged kids at Fort Wilderness eating up their ice cream treats

Those special dinners with my wife- all over the property

Spending time with my beloved grandmother walking around the Magic Kingdom

Loving every inch of Liberty Square

Watching the Electrical Water Pageant from the Polynesian Village

... and so much more. While I point out its flaws and share about what I see in the future, Walt Disney World will always hold a special place in my heart. So many great memories with my family from generations before and hopefully with ones to come. Thank you, Walt Disney Company, and especially Roy Disney, for making Walt's and many other peoples dreams come true.

Today's news that Chipotle founder Steve Ells has a new Asian restaurant brought a huge smile to my face. ShopHouse Southeast Asian Kitchen debuted in Washington D.C., home to a deservingly wide assortment of international cuisine.

Chipotle, and local gourmet burger joint Diego Zhang's, just happen to be two of my favorite places to grab a bite for lunch or dinner. If you throw in my other favorite local spot, Snooze, for breakfast, I'm set to eat in town for the day! But back to the news...

Let's just say I'm thrilled- and cannot wait to get in line in Denver for some great Asian treats. Between now and then, next trip to D.C., and you'll find me in Dupont Circle checking the place out.

The newest attraction posters for Soarin' Over California, Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, and especially the Red Car Trolleys just scream class. Retro class, retro cool. I cannot wait for the transformation to be complete. Buena Vista Street, here I come!

Opening a Pandora's Box

Tuesday's announcement of the Avatar project between Disney and James Cameron rightfully set the internet message boards ablaze, opening a Pandora's Box of sorts.

Why would the Walt Disney Company set the Imagineers hard at work on projects promoting someone else's property? Has Imagineering and the company at large lost their creative touch? Why place it in Animal Kingdom? Does it really fit the earth-centric focus of the park? What attractions are planned? Where will they go? Is this the end of Beastly Kingdom? Is this Disney's answer to Universal's Forbidden Journey with Harry Potter? What does Joe Rohde think about his baby being invaded by blue faced aliens? All great questions. Now for some speculation without a drop of official information.

Six years to fruition is an awfully long time to wait, but you can rest easy that the official Disney blog will soon be leaking information, concept art, etc. However, just a cursory glance at some stills from the movie give us fans more visuals than any official concept art ever could. Regardless of the over the top story line and the very preachy one world, New Age, self-realization, ego centric attitude, Avatar is a gorgeous looking film!What viewer was not held captivated by the images on the screen? I sure was- and if Disney can pull this off, more power to them. And all the better for theme park goers who can look past the "educational" aspects. (Entertainment aside, this is what Animal Kingdom is truly about.)

Regardless of what we think should be or not be done with Avatar, this move by the company is exactly what Disney Imagineers should have been doing years ago. Beginning with the Star Wars and Indiana Jones properties from the beginning, the Walt Disney Company should have been ahead of the edge a full decade or more before Harry appeared at Islands of Adventure, creating incredible and immersive worlds based on these properties. Fully realized lands within lands. All in theme. To be fair, this holistic approach was once on the Disney slate but almost as quickly aborted. Remember the planned Myst makeover for Treasure Island / Discovery Island? Remember Tony Baxter's prediction of the 45 minute attraction of the future? Here, in Avatarland, all will join together. However we see it, the truth is Harry did set the pace and is the new standard.

The creative genuises at Imagineering have accomplished this task before, but not at the theme parks. It was at the water parks and to great impact. Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach are quite beloved and successful both commercially and artistically, pleasing tourists and suits alike. This encompassing style is what they are trying to do on a smaller scale with the Fantasyland Forest at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom. (In fact, I happen to believe that when that project is completed, Florida's once concrete home to the princess community will be the new fan favorite of all the Fantasyland styles.)

What do I think they should create for Avatarland? Well, that's a topic for a different post- coming soon.

"You have to think anyway, so why not think big?" Brilliant!Wouldn't you just love to write this to those in charge of the Walt Disney Company and remind them that it is thinking like this that made Walt Disney a great man, one who changed the world?

Whether its the new Fantasyland or the original execution of California Adventure, wouldn't it be much better if "thinking big"replaced thinking of money?! Let's be honest here, it is not just corporate America or big business or even politicians that think small- we do it all the time as well.

What would happen if you started to think big? Just imagine the possibilities! Really- stop and think. You could be someone who changes the world, or just your world, for the better. All it takes is one little spark of inspiration.

Heroes of 911

Disney's Animal Kingdom Collection

Editors Note: This year's D23 convention was full of exciting exhibits and displays, but it unfortunately and thoroughly ignored one of Walt Disney Imagineering's most important projects of the last two decades. Disney's Animal Kingdom is a game changer for the Walt Disney Company in how it viewed and designed and managed its theme parks and in how it educated its guests. Although Part One of this six part series was first published in 2008, taking a look back at the park's history and the thought processes of the Company may give us a hint to its future. At the end of this posting of Part One, there are links to the other six articles in the series. Additionally, on this blog, there are 60+ other articles about Animal Kingdom, making it one of the both talked about subjects found here. These posts include more rare concept art, trip reports, etc. But for now, let's begin with Part One...

Earlier this year, Disney’s fourth and largest Florida theme park celebrated ten years of delighting, thrilling, or frustrating Walt Disney World guests. Plans for the future have yet to be made public, but let’s look back at the past, discuss the present, and speculate on the future of this wonderfully imagineered playground.

Why is there such a deep appreciation and an equal disdain for Disney’s Animal Kingdom? It stands distinctly different from the Mouse’s other playgrounds in the Sunshine State. For its fans, the combination of a brilliant and daring design, consistent theme, and faithful execution brings new and unique adventures and environments. Its detractors would counter there are too few attractions to hold their interest for an entire day. Both sides agree the park is a beauty to view. However dazzling this combination zoo, botanical garden, and theme park is to behold, there are also the intangible factors that draw us to it when we can look past the limited number of adventures: there is a deep emotional connection that comes from our love for nature and animals. It meets our desire to run away from the concrete jungles of modern day life and reality- if only for the day! The park is a unique entity among Disney’s theme park roster, one that will probably never be duplicated.

Beginning with Mickey himself, animals of all types and depictions continue to be a great and profitable fit with Disney. According to company lore, Walt’s well-known love for animals and exotic locales, evidenced by the inclusion of Adventureland at Disneyland, California, and his True-Life Adventure films formed the emotional heart of Animal Kingdom long before ground was ever broken. In reality, when discussion began about the creation of this park in 1989, it may have truly been a strictly business decision that brought it to fruition.

The Magic Kingdom was a concept unique to Disney, successfully capitalizing and expanding upon the reputation of its older sibling in California. The next park, EPCOT Center, conceptually different in Walt’s mind but with its execution clearly inspired by world’s fairs and corporate America trade shows, transformed Walt Disney World from a single day destination to one that could consume a traveler’s entire week. Disney-MGM Studios debuted and was the least original of the three parks, taking ideas from Universal Studios in California and Disneyland, including a new Main Street of a different era for its entrance plaza.

Michael Eisner, brilliant or be damned, was the driving force behind the creation of a nature focused park. Bringing a competitive, and some would say greedy, nature to the business, he guided the company into direct battle with his once friendly neighbors, desiring to capture all the time and money any visitor may have in Central Florida. Disney-MGM Studios Theme Park had just successfully launched to square off with the soon-to-come Universal Studios. Pleasure Island was Disney’s answer to Orlando’s popular Church Street Station, Typhoon Lagoon their response to Wet N Wild, and myriads of resort properties were added to the entire Disney complex to grab a large share of the hospitality industry’s bread and butter. Earlier in the decade, Epcot’s Living Seas pavilion took a swipe at Sea World, and now Disney’s Animal Kingdom was looking to take a large bite out of Busch Gardens popularity in nearby Tampa.

The Studios park was jammed with guests from opening day on, and the atmosphere was rich but the attractions were few. Plans were quickly put into place for expansion, and discussions began on what to do next. Outside the new park, visitors filled the water parks and daytime entertainment and shopping areas. Flush with success and lots of money to invest, Disney executives believed a large audience remained untapped. With the astounding success of all the new offerings on the property, it was only a matter of time before the strategy gelled to add another park to lure and keep vacationers on Disney soil. Watching its competition for further clues, all it took was a glance at what was going on in Tampa to realize people’s love for animals and for the Disney characters would be a hit when combined. Polls taken at the other parks confirmed the company’s hunch. The “blue sky” imagineering quietly but quickly began.

Joe Rohde, who was intimately involved in the now defunct Adventurer’s Club at Pleasure Island, got the go-ahead from Eisner early in the new decade to proceed. He would head up the small but talented team to design the new park. With only a few months, a relatively short amount of time, and a high level of secrecy, this crew began to dream, plan and envision a park that would capture an audience and their money.

The designers instinctively knew Disney’s Wild Animal Kingdom, (as it was first named), had to be different from the other Florida parks, yet it had to appeal to the masses as well. Could Disney pull off a zoological park that didn’t look or feel like one? It had to be one that could excite and not bore. These became the core challenges. The Imagineers and the money men were well aware that travelers would avoid the new park in droves if a run-of-the-mill zoo was the first impression the park left its early guests.

As with any Disney park, this one had to have its themed “lands”. Initial concepts blended traditional Magic Kingdom elements (Beastly Kingdom- home to imaginary animals and the expected Disney dark rides); an Epcot style pavilion (Conservation Station- highlighting advanced animal care techniques); and traditional zoo with safari essentials (Kilimanjaro Safaris and Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail- among others, providing real life animal encounters). Additionally, a few old school Disneyland elements reappeared with slightly different twists: an exploration into the era of prehistoric creatures from Anaheim’s Primeval World met the cutting edge technology of California’s Indiana Jones Adventure (Countdown to Extinction), repurposed Jungle Cruise boats became transportation (Discovery River Boats), and lastly another railroad line linked the more guest friendly areas with the research facility (the Wildlife Express). Of course, any and all great plans are subject to the accountants red pen!

The main themed areas were now in place, but the Imagineers had another challenge to solve as well. What should be the park’s identifying icon and how would they set the stage for an arriving visitor? The Magic Kingdom and Studios parks both used a long walkway leading from the park entrance toward its respective icon. Epcot utilized a welcome garden type area then allowed guests to walk under Spaceship Earth. After many different ideas were discussed, including entering the park through a recreation of Noah’s ark, Joe Rohde and team took a unique approach to solve the problem.

To quickly establish the idea this park was built for exploration, wonder, and maybe most importantly, was not your mother’s zoo, guests would pass the turnstiles and enter the enticing Oasis Gardens. This area establishes the feel of the park: there would be multiple paths to explore and animals and birds all around. With the vegetation lush and strewn with tropical flowers, streams, and small waterfalls, this place would be a place to relax as well as have fun. Nooks and crannies discovered along the way would contain animal exhibits quietly hidden for the folks who would choose to take the time to find them. Multiple paths into and out of the gardens encourage visitors to explore. All this to bring a sense of mystery. Once the chattering of birds and small creatures intermingled with the sounds of human laughter, anticipation would be built. What would it lead to?

To ensure the park had an extremely authentic and exotic atmosphere, the Animal Kingdom team wisely involved Paul Comstock, the modern day genius landscape architect behind so many of Disney's wonderful theme parks and resorts. Mentored by the legendary Bill Evans, his reputation is crowned by his breathtaking work on Disney's Animal Kingdom. This unique combination gives the park its bold flavor. The landscaping plan for the park is spectacular, but it is the man made masterpiece, the Tree of Life, the park’s chosen icon, that was intended to steal the show. This astounding structure is a piece of art unparalleled in Disney’s history. Designed to quickly brand the Animal Kingdom, there are more than three hundred animals are carved into its trunk and branches. Surrounding it are even more gardens, streams, and waterfalls. The Tree of Life was a bold and breathtaking choice. Situated on Safari Island, there were various concepts initially proposed for the area before the designers settled on the final one.

As expenses grew making accountants nervous, plans continued to evolve to balance the centuries old tension of art and commerce. The victims of cost cutting meant a haven for meeting the Disney characters replaced the beautiful landscapes and attractions of Beastly Kingdom, old parade floats from Disneyland were turned into the Festival of the Lion King show, and the exciting Excavator coaster for Dinoland U.S.A. became extinct. In what was ultimately another concession to the business side of the Mouse House, a 3D film based on an upcoming Disney/Pixar movie “A Bug’s Life” would be placed inside the majestic Tree of Life. Although fewer attractions would premier on opening day than what was originally designed, the park promised and would deliver enticing adventures for those guests who chose to look beyond the traditional Disney park experience.

After such an invigorating and challenging time away, it seems I have found myself at a loss for words. That doesn't happen very often! If you frequent this blog, you know I always have something to sat about the Walt Disney Company, especially what is happening (or should be!) at the parks.

Yes, I have surely missed some important landmarks and milestones in the Disney community: the 10th anniversary of perhaps the most beautiful of all Disney parks, Tokyo Disney Sea; the grand opening of Aulani, Disney's newest DVC location in Hawaii; and lastly the second D23 gathering.

Rest assured- once I get going again, I have much to share. It's just a matter of time. But for now, be patient as words are not coming easy.

D23- Much Ado About Nothing?

What a difference a couple of weeks makes!

While I was in the real world and away from the on line one, the Walt Disney Company held its 2011 D23 convention in Anaheim, California. Seems like it was full of surprises- especially in the Parks division- and maybe not in a good way.

For west coast parks, it was a showcase of what's to come soon for California Adventure with even a bit of surprising news for Disneyland thrown in. Special presentations on both Carsland (who cannot get excited now?) and Buena Vista Street (ditto) delighted attenders of the sessions with detailed looks at the park's long desired frostings on the cake. But those were a given, weren't they?

So when I returned from an extended service project putting shoe leather to my deeply held conviction of Jesus Christ being the only perfect sacrifice given for the sins of mine and all men, I expected some news that would thrill and delight me. It wasn't to be.

My first reaction after browsing the internet sites brought a collective question best summed up as "...but what about...?" Fill in the blanks here: Walt Disney World, Disneyland Paris, and particularly Shanghai Disneyland.

The model of Shanghai Disneyland was certainly unimpressive from what I could tell, revealing nothing but the deep commitment to secrecy to prevent competitors from delivering cheap knock offs of the attractions. We fans should not be surprised by this, as the Chinese have been producing knock offs of famous brands for ages be it clothing, coffee shops, or even theme parks.
Aside from a fan pleasing virtual ride through of the classic unbuilt Western River Expedition, there was little to please those most looking forward to something, anything, on the east coast.

Animal Kingdom and Epcot need the most refreshing of the Orlando properties, so I did hope there would be something for these two given all the low (high?) profile visits to the Vacation Kingdom of the World by folks rumored to either be buying the place or investing deeply in it. The same could be said for Disneyland Paris and the Studios that creativity has forgotten about. The Ratatouille attraction seemed a given, but then again, I was astounded by no announcement.

In my slight disappointment, a more balanced thought pattern emerged. The Imagineering division of the Walt Disney Company had recently created some wonderful plans for many of the parks- and the budgeteers finally released the cash to bring some to life. The new Fantasyland will be a beauty and is quite the investment into the future of the Magic Kingdom. Again, Shanghai and the plethora of new attractions for Hong Kong Disneyland will do the same in securing the market in China.

Looking deeper, the remodel of theme for Disneyland's Carnation Gardens does create a large lot of available property back in Frontierland; while of course, any announcement for Tomorrowland and especially the Peoplemover tracks would be the icing to anything announced to us rabid fans at a future D23 convention. Instant crowd pleaser. In Florida, leaving room for later surprises almost guarantees another convention in the future as well.

Conclusion? It helped me put my expectations in check. The Company we love to love and sometimes hate has given us much recently. And there is more to come. Be patient with me because I believe another couple of years will produce another Carousel of Projects, a list of announcements that will be much to talk about for years.

Here's the one upcoming album I am very excited about this season! Michael Buble finally wraps has terrific vocals around some great, classic Christmas music on a full length album. His is the voice of Christmas for this generation, just as Karen Carpenter was for hers. Speaking of the Carpenters, both their holiday albums still rule the Christmas speakers in our home. There's No Place Like Home

Honor Hunter (love the name!) over at Blue Sky Disney must have some of the best connections to the Walt Disney Company, particularly in Imagineering! In his latest post, Honor spills some of the beans on the attraction roster for Shanghai Disneyland. As expected, there is a great line up, but it is the Light Cycles attraction from the movie Tron: Legacy that has me most excited!Sure, it looks like it is coming at the expense of the classic Space Mountain, but it could be a worthwhile tradeoff. Disney World Trip Report- 20 Years From Last Visit!

Imagine if you will... not having been to Walt Disney World for almost 20 years. Hard to think of for us Disney geeks, but it was reality for my sister and her husband. And I'm here to give you a second hand trip report as told to me by her. Perhaps you may see the Resort through a new set of eyes.

As with any trip report, it begins with who is traveling. In this case, my sister and her husband, both 50ish, and two daughters, one 26 and the other 17. My eldest niece last saw Walt Disney World in May of 1992, and my younger one had never been to the Vacation Kingdom of the World. My brother in law is by no means a big fan of Disney. In fact, he would probably prefer Universal Studios or a Marvel based theme park, but hint, hint, he is a huge lover of the Discovery Channel and Animal Planet.

Due to other obligations, the parents arrived in Orlando first. They stayed at Lake Buena Vista. Immediate reactions to Orlando? "So many palm trees!" Spent the evening relaxing at Downtown Disney followed by a swim. The youngest daughter arrived the next evening, the eldest one day later than her sister- but the eldest was also departing a day earlier to go back to her husband on the West Coast. This left 3 days total for all of them to experience the resort together, beach time excluded.

Day One: Disney's Hollywood Studios, party of three.

Since the eldest daughter had been to Disney's California Adventure as well as Disneyland, they decided to do the former Disney-MGM Studios without her. She had ridden the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror already and little else seemed to appeal to her. Even though we hard core fans know each version is different and that Florida's is superior, here is the "reverse downside" of cloning attractions on both coasts. Anyone from California and familiar with that resort may bypass the Studios due to their view of a lack of compelling unique attractions there.

Arriving at the park well after opening, they began their day with a quick ride on Rock N Rollercoaster- which unanimously remained their favorite attraction in the park. I asked why. "It's just fun!" The Great Movie Ride was "ok" but the spectacular entrance of the Wicked Witch of the West was the highlight of the aging attraction. Star Tours 2 - great. Their journey through the Tower of Terror surprised and impressed them by the 5th Dimension room, eliciting a family friendly expression of shock.

The longest line for the day (at 20 minutes) remained Toy Story Midway Mania, and beyond three limousine rides with Aerosmith, it was the only ride they deemed repeatable. A quick lunch in a nameless restaurant (not a good sign if it couldn't be remembered or described) and no shopping led to an early evening exit. They had no interest in seeing Fantasmic!, however, a last minute choice to see the Little Mermaid theater show as they walked past left my sister with a smile on her face. Dinner was at Earl of Sandwhich, a pattern which would be repeated several times. And another swim ended the night.

Day Two: Magic Kingdom, party of four

Since daughter number one had to be picked up at the airport at around 11:00am, they did not arrive at the Magic Kingdom until 1:30pm. Dropped the car off straight at the lot and took the monorail in from the Transportation and Ticket Center. As I suspected, the ride on the Monorail past the resorts and around the lake made quite the impression on my youngest niece as it was her first visit to the park most appropriately compared to Disneyland.

Pirates of the Caribbean beckoned as the first destination. The remaining order was blurry in her memory, but Splash Mountain was happily with no wait due to Fast Pass- yet it was balanced out by a lengthy 40 minutes for Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. Not to be found in Disneyland, Liberty Square looked great, but it was not enough to grab their attention beyond the visit into the Haunted Mansion. No mention of the enhanced queue, and I didn't ask leading questions just so I could see what she told me about.

Fantasyland: Here, I quote my sister's reaction to It's a Small World- "It was just so beautiful compared to California!" No Philharmagic, instead they chose Snow White's Scary Adventures. And they were not told by me or did not realize it was on the chopping block due to the new Fantasyland Forest expansion. No Winnie the Pooh- "Saw that in California"or any other Fantasyland attraction beyond the ones I have mentioned. No snacking, no shopping.

A good amount of time was spent in Tomorrowland. It was Buzz Lightyear, Stitch, and Monsters, but a journey through Space Mountain was not to be had as the waits were 90 minutes each time they checked.

Interestingly to my way of thinking, there was not a single visit to Country Bear Jamboree or Carousel of Progress. Even though she and I grew up with these California favorites, they obviously did not have the lasting appeal to draw a visit when given the opportunity. Is it time for me to place them in their proper historical context and move on? I'll have to consider that!

To sum up the Magic Kingdom, my sister remarked about the incredibly lovely landscaping, the amount of available space- "the blessing of size"- and the beauty of the castle. Leaving the park after dark meant a stop at the Grand Floridian just to see it, followed by a visit to Gloria Estefan's Bongo's Cuban Cafe. (Great atmosphere, fatty food.)

Day Three: Epcot

Not being early risers, it was quite impressive to me that they arrived at my favorite Florida park before opening! Guess my talk about the Test Track/ Soarin' queues was successful.

Using both Fast Pass and the single rider line, everyone was able to ride Test Track three times total- and snag a ride on Soarin' (another Disney California Adventure favorite) with relatively little wait. A quick spin on nearby Mission:Space made my brother-in-law quite ill, not a small feat. He's a big, ex-football player, with a strong stomach. Needless to say, it was not the highlight of their Epcot day.

As much as the decent on Spaceship Earth is a sore spot for some of us, they found it quite fun, enjoying the personalization at the conclusion. There was no time for Living with the Land - one of our must dos- and The Seas with Nemo and Friends was a big hit, particularly the dark ride portion. No visit into the crystal pyramids of Imagination, either. In fact, I just ride it now to imagine what could and should be compared to the current pale imitation of what once was. Not even Michael Jackson could influence their decision. So much for Future World.

World Showcase was also to their liking. Interestingly, there was not a single mention of any particular attraction here (quite telling!)but stopping for lunch at the Yakitori House and a quick dessert at the new La Hacienda de San Angel made for a pleasant diversion between attractions. In spite of my sales pitch to stay for Illuminations - the best nighttime show on the property- , they opted out, left the park early for dinner once again at Earl of Sandwhich and an evening swim.

Day Four: Disney's Animal Kingdom, Typhoon Lagoon

For each Disney park enthusiast, there is that first time we walk into a brand new theme park. It happens so rarely; the thrill of new discovery, the fresh eyes to see things never encountered before, lots of "How did the Imagineers do that?" Honestly, I was very excited for them to experience the park, its immense beauty, and the new attractions- especially my long talked about favorite Expedition: Everest.

It was a choice between Kilimanjaro Safaris and Everest for the first ride of the day. An encounter with the yeti won out. Two happy rides later, they moved onto Kali River Rapids before hitting the safari. Following this up with the Maharaja Jungle Trek, they exited the park for some watery thrills of another kind.

I was shocked to hear this, as given my brother-in-law's love of animals, I expected this park to be the sleeper hit. No Dinosaur? No Festival of the Lion King? What about a meal at Flame Tree Barbecue or a showing of It's Tough to Be a Bug? In asking about the park, their answers made me think of my own observations over the years. In fact, my review of the park based on my last visit seemed very similar. (You can read it here.)

Their's was not a flattering assessment of the place. The animal exhibits were interesting but several "naturalistic" environments could be found at zoos they had seen; not enough Disney attractions (rides); theater shows are not their thing; too much of the same. What about theming and landscaping? Not enough to warrant more time, so they left. Typhoon lagoon was the crowd pleaser of the day, particularly the swim with the sharks. Dinner at Rainforest Cafe finished off the evening.

Day Five: Pony Rides, Goodbyes, and a Last Fling at the Polynesian

Stick ponies that is, at the Whispering Canyon Cafe. My sister had asked me to recommend a great place for breakfast before they reluctantly started dropping the daughters back off at the airport in the afternoon. Whispering Canyon did not disappoint. Nor did the short stroll around the Wilderness Lodge!

The food, the atmosphere, the fun. My sis described this breakfast as one of their most memorable experiences in all of Walt Disney World. Waitresses yelling across the room, pony races, laughing kids, great food. They'd go again in a minute. After an airport run, the adults returned to the Polynesian Village (sorry, I relapse)for a quick bite at Captain Cook's and walking the resort grounds before retiring for the night.

Now the million dollar question: Would they do it again? The answer surprised me. Yes, absolutely, without a doubt. But they would save much more money before they went, would stay on the property, and would spend much more time in recreation and being at the resorts, spreading out their park visits between more leisurely days.

Favorite Park? "Epcot, absolutely"
Favorite Attraction? Expedition Everest, Test Track, or Rock N Rollercoaster
Favorite Meal? Whispering Canyon Cafe

As much as would have loved to be there with them to see things through their eyes, I did get a pretty good idea of it all! I wondered how I could ever enjoy a Vacation Kingdom visit without Illuminations, a visit to at least one sit down Epcot restaurant in World Showcase, and a dozen other things. This isn't even counting favorite attractions!

Sure, opinions will vary, but here are the things they did not say. Not mention of peeling paint, poor upkeep, or too many character based attractions being shoehorned into the parks.

You and I, die hard fans, see these changes and cringe. Rightfully so, as a trip to Walt Disney World today reveals much less care of the parks and groups than that of previous decades. However to the casual or once in a lifetime visitor, the place still packs an impressive wallop. And unfortunately, that very fact is what keeps the current management team from doing more than is absolutely necessary!

Shanghai's Fantastic Fairytale Castle

Really?! This is the name of the castle for Shanghai Disneyland?... "Fantastic Fairytale Castle". So generic. So unimaginative. So marketing driven. According to this article by the People's Daily, that is the name of the beautiful edifice soon to debut on Mainland China. It's about as charming as using "Mischievous Rodent" for the name of The Walt Disney Company icon.

Plumber's Crack

Just finished a lengthy and frustrating plumbing job! A broke garbage disposal, leaky faucet, and chipped sink finally caught up with us. After spending too much money and too many hours, the job is done. My wife is a rock star! She could think through all the logistics and not bat an eye at the level of work needed to finish the job. I'm all thumbs. Glad I married a handy man!

Concept Pieces for Adventure Through Inner Space

Time for a Disneyland gem: Adventure Through Inner Space premiered on August 5, 1967. It was one of several new attractions for the revamped land, making Tomorrowland truly a world on the move.

The PeopleMover cruised through this land, giving guests a tour of all the new attractions by weaved in and out of each building. The unique views of Adventure Through Inner Space enticed guests to hop off the brand new transportation system and turn around and queue for a fantastic adventure aboard an Atomobile.

Journeys into the world of a melting snowflake made for a dynamic attraction as riders viewed molecules, orbiting electrons, and eventually the nucleus itself in very dark and cool showrooms. A somewhat psychedelic sounding musical score enhanced the atmosphere. Made for a great escape on a hot summer day! As you can tell from the sketch above and the more finished concept art at the top, the Disney Imagineers created a powerful draw of an attraction- especially for teens clamoring for a little intimacy with their dates!

Elliott Gets Real

Let's Get to What's Real.

There's no doubt in my mind that this man can sing. None whatsoever. He can write. But I wasn't exactly rushing out to buy the American Idol's third studio disc. Gather 'round by Elliott Yamin should have been another hit. First, I'd have to pay import prices as no American based record label wanted it. Secondly, it would have to come from Japan, so I wasn't willing to wait, and the disc eventually fell off my radar. However, an Amazon gift card changed all that, and soon enough, the collection was on its way.

The opening number, Three Words, is effective but doesn't grab my ear the way Fight for Love or Wait for You did when I first heard those earlier releases. Not a good sign. Even though I am a big fan of the voice and love all the background vocals, it just seemed as if Elliott was trying too hard. The rest of the cuts on side one didn't do it for me either.

The disc's title opens the second half and is a pretty fun cut. Later, Self Control had great promise but ends much too quickly at just over two and a quarter minutes.

Just as I was about to call the disc a wash and relegate it to my storage bins, the slow jam 70's groove of Let's Get to What's Real popped into my head, winning me over with its old school elegance and catchy lyrical hook. Philly soul meets modern day R&B, an instantly likable, unexpected hit. Relaxed and comfortable in his own skin, Elliott belongs here- honoring the greats of the past by bringing in new songs with an older style.

The man who won the audience's over with his stellar rendition of Moody's Mood for Love should step back and reaccess where he's going musically. With his songwriting skills, terrific voice, and warm personality, Elliott Yamin should make his idols, Stevie Wonder and Donny Hathaway, quite proud. I'm up for one more try...

Time to Fix the Magic

Every fan of the website MiceAge knows founder Al Lutz is rightfully hard on the Walt Disney Company when it comes to the theme parks. Whether it was the deteriorating state of Disneyland in the 90's or the debacle of California Adventure in 2001, Al was among the first not to sugar coat what was going on, calling the company back to high standards in design and upkeep. The results of his hard work have contributed to raising the standard. Now, aside from the gorgeously built and maintained Tokyo Disney Resort, the Anaheim property stands tallest among the ones Stateside and in Europe.

Walt Disney World has had no such champion willing to go to bat for high quality- up until now. Fix the Magic is a new site dedicated to returning the Florida complex to a place where mediocrity no longer exists. It's a start-up for sure, but it is a beginning. Show your support. Maybe, just maybe, a few years from now this site will be part of the reason Walt Disney World returns to its former glory- and not because of very popular wizard down the highway began to outshine the one in Florida that started it all!

Nineteen Years Without Walt Disney World

As a Disney geek, I find it hard to imagine. Nevertheless, my sister and her husband are right now at Walt Disney World nineteen years after their last visit in 1992. (Photo above with most of all the kids in our family circa 1992.) Absolutely unbelievable. I am thrilled for them!

Imagine experiencing a whole new theme park (Animal Kingdom), Test Track, Mission:Space, and Soarin' at Epcot , Toy Story Midway Mania and Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, and Rock N Rollercoaster for the first time. Of course, they also have to deal with the dumbing down of Tomorrowland at the Magic Kingdom, the disintegration of the Imagination pavilion, and the same old World Showcase at Epcot. I'll report back in the days ahead with what could be a very interesting perspective on the current state of Walt Disney World through the eyes of someone not quite as fanatical as the rest of us.

R.I.P. Disney's California Adventure

Here is a very large scale photo I took one early morning in 2009 as I was patiently waiting to enter Disneyland. (Make sure you click on it to see it full size.) Having my ticket in hand from purchasing it the night before and arriving at the resort at about 7am, it seemed like the Esplanade was deserted. That is, until about 15 minutes later when both day guests, hotel guests and cast members filled the area. But until that time, Southern California's early morning fog seemed thick for the middle of Anaheim.

Looking back two years later and the removal of the small replica of the Golden Gate Bridge and the giant C-A-L-I-F-O-R-N-I-A letters, and the replacement with the new Pan Pacific themed entrance, this photo now has a slightly nostalgic feel. Goodbye, Disney's California Adventure and your empty pathways, mostly mediocre attractions, distracting layout, and tongue in cheek tributes to the trendy world of Los Angeles. Hello, Disney California Adventure, where even more Pixar characters mingle with even more classic Disney characters, and Walt Disney's history collides with John Lasseter's world. Mater meet Ariel.

Visually Impaired

Sometimes I just don't see things correctly. My eyesight was getting so bad before my youngest daughter's wedding, that I had to go into the doc to get a new prescription and a quick set of glasses so that I could watch the ceremony in crystal clear vision just a few feet in front of me. It was an important thing I did not want to miss!

Fast forward to just a few months later. With my wife, I am working through the study by Beth Moore entitled Breaking Free. The main focus is gaining true freedom from the things that hold our hearts and minds captive. It is an intense and deeply difficult study, but the results hold promise. So, I persevere.

The pivotal question for the day's study is "Can you think of several reasons why we should cast down pride to break free from any areas of captivity?" Much to my surprise, the answers come quickly from my heart:

Pride can keep us from seeing things as God does.
Pride can keep us from seeing other people as He does.
Pride can keep us from seeing ourselves as He does.
Pride can keep us from seeing Him as He is.

I think I have a lot of work to do...

Maddening and Addicting

Why attend a – DoYouKnowMe.org - Real Relations event?

Even as our culture becomes more ethnically and culturally diverse from our neighborhoods to the President - there is a remarkable amount of polarization and tension driving division in this country. A culture of instant gratification encourages the use of stereotypes and superficial labels. We respond to people based on pre-conceived ideas rather than relationship. We cannot hope to find common ground because we are not really in dialogue – we are just preaching our own perspective. People can see examples of the tension exploding in a variety of ways, but is an issue that people don't know how to process. People don't have a healthy way (vehicle) to talk about racial issues - even if they are willing.

The idea is to bring people together in a relatively safe environment of music, story and prayer to acknowledge and give expression to the issue on a personal level. Because everyone is unique we are not promoting any particular agenda or ministry - specific approach or attitude. This is not a top down approach but an attempt to empower people and through them - local communities to action! If people are willing to expand their own understanding we hope people will take their personal commitment to the next level and seek to understand the people around them – even if they don’t agree.

DoYouKnowMe.org is based on the idea that much of the tension we are experiencing (some of it turning to violence) is because we are unwilling to REALLY get to know people through loving committed relationships. Each of us "labels" people based on our perception of them without really getting to know them. Changing this would be good for all people – but as Christians we have been called to this in our daily lives. As people of the Church and disciples of Christ we are not always living out the commandment to "love your neighbor as yourself." If each of us would be willing to identify the person in our own "sphere" (that we may have chosen until now to pass by) and choose to get to know that person - things will change for the better. If each of us will change one thing in our own sphere of influence - every sphere influences another -and the ripple (or multiplication) effect can be tremendous.

Think about each of your personal, familial, relational, recreational, social, religious, educational, vocational, governmental etc. spheres. I really believe that if we can get people excited at a grassroots level about changing one thing in their own sphere of influence we can make a difference beyond ourselves for the kingdom.

The results could be exponential! (2 Cor. 10:13-16) Of course that transformation (willingness to change one thing) comes as we enter into prayer and worship! Please come and join us – and simply ask God, “Who is MY neighbor?” and “Do I really know them?”

Goodbye to the Golden Gate Bridge

Tonight, one of the last remnants of Disney's California Adventure version 1.0 gets removed. The hideous and misplaced miniature of California's historic and beautiful Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco finally gets lost for good.

Why did I include a photograph of the real thing? Just to show the stark contrast between the majesty of the original and the cheapness of Disney's knockoff. Adios, goodbye, farewell. Hope to not see you again- unless it is part of a fully realized and elegant San Francisco area in the park.

Lovely Bride and Dashing Groom

One of my favorite shots from our daughter's wedding. The great photographer, Sarah Severn, did a wonderful job of going beyond the "stand and pose" attitude of some of her peers. The end result- artsy, fresh photos of the couple in some unique settings in the Highlands area of Denver. But even here, an ordinary setting made for an extraordinary shot...Along with the required stand and pose shots required by Mom and Dad, of course!

Design Detail: Midway Mercantile

Lots of attention has been paid to the Paradise Pier makeover at Disney California Adventure, particularly its beautiful gardens and dining area. It's a stunning example of what happens when Imagineering is given the mandate to come up with something fantastic- and they do!

As the above photograph reveals, this extreme park makeover has brought great detail to a park previously known for its lack of it. The Midway Mercantile building's gorgeous woodwork was one of the first examples of this new commitment to quality. Isn't it beautiful! And I cannot wait to see Buena Vista Street!

The Rise and Fall of Disney's Animal Kingdom

How can a Disney theme park with so much promise fall into such a miserable state less than 15 years after opening? Such is the case of Disney's Animal Kingdom at Walt Disney World.

Although it opened on Opening on Earth Day 1988, the park began capturing the interest and curiosity of the public years ago when the project was first announced. "Why would Disney want to create a zoo?" was a common question- one that Disney's own accountants had to be asking themselves as well. It was one the Company itself had to be asking after guest numbers fell year after year. And it is one die hard Disney theme park fans- and perhaps even Imagineer Joe Rohde- are now asking themselves while the Walt Disney Company lets this beautiful, rich kingdom die a slow death, watching it devolve into just another zoo.

With broken effects in most of the major attractions, shortened hours, overpriced restaurants, and rehashed parades, although Disney's Animal Kingdom once had the ability to match Tokyo Disney Sea in elan and beauty, the company tossed its potential aside due to neglect in both upkeep and lack of further enhancements. The pricey Wild Africa Trek does not make up for a lack of expansion, but it does explain away the reason for a broken yeti at Expedition Everest, closing shows without replacements, and offering nothing new in years. Clearly, corporate greed trumps customer satisfaction and high value for the dollars spent. Please prove me wrong, Mr. Iger, please do.

My intent here is not to rehash a detailed history of the park. (For those that are interested, I do so in a six part series that begins here.) Today, I just want to ask the question, "What happened?"
